First, the necessary message: God created humans to have intimacy solely in the context of marriage, according to the Bible. Outside of marriage, whether for pleasure or for any other reason, intimacy is prohibited (1 Corinthians 6:18).

The Bible makes no mention of intimacy for pleasure. In fact, the Song of Solomon enthusiastically endorses intimacy for pleasure. The church’s opposition to intimacy for pleasure has a tangled history that wasn’t well documented until the sixteenth century.

The Council of Trent (1546) decided that amor concupiscentiae, was not sin in and of itself, but could lead to guilt. The Catholic Church eventually came to the conclusion that intimacy for the sole sake of pleasure was inappropriate.

The act is a worshipful manifestation of the love, self-sacrifice, and oneness of the married connection, not necessarily because of the birth control issue, however they believe that every encounter must be open to the potential of conception.

This is deeper and richer than intimacy for pleasure, and appreciating intimacy as a physical representation of God’s promise that “they [the husband and wife] shall become one flesh” is surely biblical (Genesis 2:24).

1 Corinthians 7:3-5 also supports this point of view. Individuals who desire intimacy just for the purpose of physical pleasure, even within marriage, are not demonstrating the spirit of mutual surrender that God intended. Not only a physical release, intimacy should be a component of and an outcome of a loving marriage connection.

In modern times, however, “intimacy for pleasure” is frequently discussed in the context of birth control, and the Bible has little to say about this. As previously stated in prior articles, the Bible does not prohibit the prudent use of birth control.

Furthermore, the Bible makes no mention of a physically infertile couple not having intimacy. In this approach, it is totally acceptable for a couple to engage in intimacy for purposes other than trying to conceive a child.
