I’m One Of The Men Who Beat Their Wives At Home, If I Don’t Beat Her, She Won’t Respect Me -Man Says

During an open interview among men about domestic violence with BBC Pidgin, some men came out boldly to tell the audience that they beat their wives at home. Some men bragged how beating their wives instilled discipline and make their wives accord them respect.

Some of the men who were interviewed in Kenya said that male-on-female violence should not be tolerated. Some good men say that one should never beat his wife, and others agree. One of the men said that he and other African men beat up their wives to make them respect them.He said that some men use violence because it has been a cultural norm in Africa. Of they don’t hit and beat their wives they will never respect and accord them respect they fully deserves.

He said if you don’t beat your wife she will never respect you and make you feel small. She will not be scared of you and will try to control you. One said his my grandmother always said, “If you don’t beat your wife, she will not respect you, and she’ll treat you like a nobody.” Grandma also said that “You can beat your wife but don’t kill her.” He says if you want to make a woman respect you, hit, slap or beat her.

A man in the group argued that he didn’t need to beat his wife to gain respect from her, and if she truly loved him, she would surely respect him. He then went on to say how shameful it was that the men in the gathering supported beating women to gain respect. It is obvious that Africa has a long way to go when it comes to improving attitudes towards women. Do you agree a man should beat his wife to gain respect from her?
