Courtois on camera explaining the handball rule to Sevilla fans after Vinicius’ goal was disallowed

Courtois took a seat and chatted with Sevilla fans during the video assistant referee (VAR) check about whether it was a handball from Vinicius and whether the goal was going to be ruled out or not.

The Brazilian seemed to have stopped the ball with his shoulder. It’s unclear what the referee saw as a handball. The referee was even requested to a re-check by VAR, but he persisted on sticking to his original verdict.

A slew of VAR-related disputes heightened the tension in an already tense game. 

Along with Vincius Jr’s goal being disallowed, the referee decided not to award a penalty to the Merengues for what appeared to be a handball by Sevilla defender Diego Carlos. Eduardo Camavinga, a Madrid midfielder, escaped an obvious second yellow card after a clumsy tackle on Anthony Martial. 

“I saw it live and it didn’t look like it touched his hand,” Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti remarked of the handball incident. It’s just not making sense to me. It’s difficult to judge these situations, but… this move seemed fairly obvious to me. We appeared to be a fatigued squad in the first half, but the intensity in the second half was incredible. You can’t always put your finger on these things in football. I’m particularly perplexed by the interpretations of Diego Carlos’ and Vincius’ handballs.” 

‘These are things that only Real Madrid can do.’ 

Madrid presently has a 15-point lead over Sevilla, Barcelona (who have two games in hand), and Atlético Madrid (60 points).
