Stealing To Live Good, Man Thrown Into Jail

A man, who saw himself as smart and stole from his employers to live the good life, has been thrown into jail.

Ernest Boakye, aged 30, was employed by an oil marketing as fuel station manager but ended up stealing Ghs398,545.56 from the .

For doing that, he is now going to spend 120 months in jail. This was after the Mpraeso Circuit Court, presided over by Stephen Kumi, found him guilty of the offence.

Boakye has been working with Infin Ghana Limited as the manager of its Kwahu-Tafo Fuel Station in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region.

The Administrator of the oil marketing detected that the bank pay-in slips of product sales made by Boakye were at variance with the bank statements and became suspicious.

An internal audit was subsequently carried out and this uncovered that an amount totaling Ghs398,545.56 had been stolen, leading to his arrest.

Boakye profusely denied stealing the money and insisted that the audit finding was not consistent with the fact and that he paid all monies into the bank account of the .

He, however, could not produce the pay-in slips to back his claim.

He also refused to tender in evidence copies of the bank statements he has requested to court to compel the to provide him with to aid his case.

The circuit judge in handing down the punishment, said Boakye deserved to be punished to send a strong message to other workers engaged in workplace theft, collapsing businesses and discouraging people from setting up businesses.

The judge made a reference to the fact that the stealing was done at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The complainant did not lay off the convict, he kept his job to enable him to take care of himself and his family and instead of reciprocating this gesture by working diligently and with integrity, he rather decided to betray the trust of the and stole such a huge sum of money from them.”
