5 Adinkra Symbols and Their Meaning

It is important to revisit some aspects of our culture so that it is preserved. This article will thus touch on five Adinkra symbols and their meaning.

Adinkra symbols are visual symbols that have risen in popularity and can be found on furniture, clothes, logos, etc. Adinkra symbols originated from the Gyaman people of Ghana and la Cote d’Ivoire.

The symbols usually hold some historical and philosophical messages.

1. Gye Nyame (Except God)

This symbol expresses how great God is and that nothing is beyond Him.

2. Sankofa (Go back and get it)

This symbol encourages one to have self-reflection and go back for some traits which are valuable but were left behind. The symbol also means learning from the past so that a better future can be built.

3. Adinkrahene (King of the Adinkra Symbols)

This symbol signifies leadership, authority, and charisma. Being the King of the Adinkra symbols, it is thus a symbol highly associated with Kings. The other Adinkra symbols are reportedly inspired by this Adinkrahene symbol.

4. Nkyinkyim (Twisting)

This symbol describes that the journey of life is one of torture by nature.

These days many people journey through life and are easily dismayed when they face little obstacles. However, if they learn some of these philosophical lessons, especially with Nkyinkyim, they will approach life with more resilience.

5. Odo Nnyew Fie Kwan (Love does not lose its way home)

This symbol implies that those who are guided by love always end up in the right place.
