What is vaginal odour?

Vaginal odour occurs as a result of several factors. Sometimes vaginal odour may result from an excessive discharge of a whitish fluid produced in the mucus membrane of the uterus, cervix and the vagina. This can be a very humiliation, annoying and embarrassing health problem for most women. Any woman or lady suffering from this condition cannot ignore it and leave it untreated. The good news however is that, vaginal odour is treatable. But before we get to how we can treat vaginal odour, let’s first understand what are some of the causes of vaginal odour.

Causes of vaginal odour.

1. Bacterial infections.

Bacterial vaginosis is a condition caused by changes in the bacteria near your vagina. The US Office on Women’s health says researchers aren’t sure what causes bacterial vaginosis. However, doctors do recognized that women who douche, have multiple sex partners or have an unhealthy balance of bacteria have risk of getting Bacterial Vaginosis.

2. Menstruation.

It is normal for the acidity levels around the vagina to change. According to Flo, an online health platform, research shows that during menstruation, the blood has an elevated pH. This blood and uterine lining mix with the microflora in the walls of the vagina, which affect the smell. Still on menstruation, a common way by which the vagina become smelly is the failure to change your tampon regularly.

3. Diet.

Undoubtedly, most of the foods we eat contain different levels of acid content. The acid in foods usually react with the vagina’s microflora. Excessive use of strong spices such as onions, garlic as well as alcohol intake can the level of acid production in your body. Naturally, every woman’s body is unique as such may have different reactions to the intake of these substances and food ingredients. The consumption of some of these food substances and ingredients can result into the production of unpleasant vaginal odour.

4. Improper hygiene.

To every human being, sweat is a common cause of odour. Certain habits and biological phenomena such as perspiration are inevitable. However, excessive of this can result from wearing tight fitting panties, especially in the midst of heat.

5. Sexually transmitted diseases.

Sexually transmitted diseases such as candidiasis which often causes the the discharge of a whitish fluid from the vagina may be s reason for vaginal odour. Trichomoniasis also has the potential of releasing unusual fishy smell and can be treated with medication.
