Chickens like human beings are prone to intestinal worms, especially those on free-range systems. Worm infestation in birds can harm their feed conversion and egg production.Chickens infected with worms show these signs: Loss of weight, diarrhea, irregular egg-laying, and stunted growth. In this article, I discuss four natural ways you can deworm chickens and how to prevent worms from your chicken farm.
1) Garlic
Garlic has anti-parasitic properties which help to eliminate worms in poultry birds.Buy powdered garlic and mix it with feeds or water and then pour in the chicken drinkers. Do not overfeed chickens with garlic as it may affect the smell of their eggs.
2) Apple Cider Vinegar
This is another effective anti-parasitic option for chicken deworming. Put 4 litres of water in a container and then add one tablespoon of vinegar. Thereafter, Pour this solution into the chicken drinkers for the birds to take.
3) Pepper
Pepper is also good for eliminating intestinal worms from the body of chickens. It can be pounded and then mixed with chicken feeds. However, you should be aware that chicken eggs may have a different taste if they frequently consume feeds with pepper.
4) Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are effective at eliminating worms and other parasitic infections from the bodies of chickens. This is because the seeds contain an anti-parasitic property known as cucurbitacin which kills worms by incapacitating them. For every bird that weighs 1kg, give it 3 grams of powdered pumpkin seeds.
Prevention Tips
Prevention is better than cure, so they say. Below are some tips on how to prevent worms from infecting your folk.
1) Avoid Overcrowding
When birds are crowded in a room, the hygiene is likely to be poor. So make sure your birds have plenty of space to reduce the chances of parasitic infections.
2) Do Not Throw Feeds On The Ground
When you throw feeds on the ground for the birds to eat, you dramatically increase the chances of your flock being infected with intestinal worms.
3) Wild Birds Should be prohibited from the poultry house. This is because they may be infested with worms and can, therefore, spread them through their droppings.
4) The poultry house, especially the floor should always be kept clean and dry at all times because dump places are perfect breeding environments for worms and other parasites.
