It’s a well-known fact that the United States military is not to be taken for granted. Their military is arguably one of the world’s toughest and most formidable armed forces. When it comes to the application of technology in the military, they will undoubtedly be at the top of the list, and in this article, I want to show you the LS3 Robotic Dogs used by the US army for carrying military weapons to war zones.
The Legged Squad Support System, also known as LS3, was built by Boston Dynamics on December 3, 2009. It was a project for a legged robot that could function autonomously as a packhorse for a squad of soldiers or marines, and was designed specifically for the US army due to its ability to operate in hot, cold, wet, and dirty conditions.
The Robotic Dogs were made to transport heavy equipment, and they can carry loads weighing up to 400 pounds (180 kg). They have more than 50 sensors that measure body acceleration, force of joint actuators, engine speed, temperature, and hydraulic pressure inside the robot’s internal engine.
Its four legs are well-equipped with four low-friction hydraulic cylinder actuators that power the joints. They are capable of searching, tracking, and rescuing in nuclear, biological, radiological, and chemical environments.
