In an interview with Osei Bonsu (OB) on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Programme, the Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh hinted that he would lead the people of Kumasi on a demonstration if the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta allocate funds to address issues of the tidal wave disaster which hit Keta and other communities in the Volta Region. The Energy Minister stated that even though he totally supports the Keta Sea Defense Project, he does not support the request made by the NDC Caucus in Parliament to compulsorily cater for the tidal wave disaster victims before they approve the 2022 Budget. Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh added that the people of Kumasi were equally hit by a disaster (numerous floods) but were not catered for in the budget.

In a counter argument, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Sammy Gyamfi queried the Energy Minister whether the people of Keta were equally not humans [Ghanaians] as the people of Kumasi. Mr. Sammy Gyamfi added that the Minister for Works and Housing Minister, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye said that the issues of the tidal wave disaster victims would be addressed in the 2022 Budget but that did not happen. He explained that the Finance Minister failed to even sympathize with the tidal wave disaster victims during the 2022 Budget presentation and added that the NDC Caucus in Parliament did the right thing by prompting the Finance Minister to address the tidal wave disaster issue that hit Keta in the 2022 Budget.

Mr. Sammy Gyamfi added that the Energy Minister could have made his statement in a good way where he could have pushed for the issues affecting the people of Kumasi and Keta to be addressed because the residents in these towns are all Ghanaians. Mr. Sammy Gyamfi described the Energy Minister’s statement as discriminatory and as such called on him to retract his statement. He added that the Energy Minister should render an unqualified apology to the good people of Keta for making such statements.

What do you make of the Minister of State’s statement concerning the Keta Sea Defense Project? Whatarer your views on Sammy Gyamfi’s statement too?
