The impasse in Parliament over the approval of the 2022 budget appears not to simmer down soon. There is a longstanding controversy between the two sides of the Chamber after the Minority Caucus disagreed with the decision taken by the Majority to pass the budget that was initially rejected under the leadership of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin.

Few days ago, the Haruna-led Minority Caucus issued a statement to register its disappointment in the behaviour of the 1st Deputy Speaker and accused him of wrongly interpreting the constitution. However, fresh information trickling in has it that, a 20 member committee has been set up by Parliament to investigate the tussle and restore calm in the house.

Earlier today, December 3, 2021, a former Deputy Minister for Communications under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Honourable Felix Ofosu Kwakye was interviewed on Good morning Ghana Show hosted by Dr. Randy Abbey. Ofosu Kwakye made several remarks about the brouhaha in Parliament while disagreeing with what the majority did during proceedings.

According to the verbose politician, he was very disappointed in what transpired in Parliament after both sides of the house staged a walkout from the Chamber. He believes such actions are less expected at this critical moment. Responding to a claim made by Nana Akomeah, Ofosu Kwakye indicated that the NPP MPs were totally wrong in their reasons given to justify their walkout.

Felix Ofosu Kwakye registered his disappointment over the failure of President Akuffo-Addo to engage the leadership of the house to explain the budget. According to the verbose Communicator, he expected the President to hold an emergency meeting with the leadership of both caucuses at the time when parliament broke down.

Speaking further, he indicated such move by President Akuffo-Addo would help end the impasse. He however, declared that he was disappointed in the President who was not in the country during the budget presentation and debate. He said, “What would it take away from the President to hold a meeting between the two sides of the house. He could explain to then why he presented such budget. I am disappointed because he could not hold such a meeting. He could have led the effort to solve this issue.”
