Yesterday was an interesting day in Parliament as it presented a showdown between the Minority and Majority sides of Parliament. On Friday the Majority walked out causing the Minority to reject the 2022 budget. On Tuesday the Minority also failed to attend Parliament as the Majority rescinded the earlier decision and approved the budget.
In Parliament yesterday, the Minority raised a motion to overturn the budget approval but this failed leading to a throw of words among the MPs. MPs sang and banged tables in approval and disproval of the First Deputy’s ruling to uphold his decision on Tuesday. The House was later suspended and subsequently adjourned.
President Akufo-Addo was however not in the country when yesterday’s events happened. The president is currently in the United States for a conference. Akufo-Addo gave the keynote address yesterday at the 45th Annual Legislative Conference of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. The president spoke on Ghana’s post Covid-19 economic recovery and development strategy.
President Akufo-Addo also met with the Black Caucus of legislators and acquainted himself with him. This is in sharp contrast to what was happening in his own country where legislators were arguing, throwing words and grabbing chairs in the chamber. With the current hung Parliament, travelled Speaker, it is expected that the incoming days will be tenser than ever.
