The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that at least 2,380 lives have been lost to road accidents alone between January and October 2021.
Speaking at the launch of the ‘National Stay Alive’ campaign by the NSRA in Accra, the director-general of the NRSA, May Obiri-Yeboah, begged road users across the country to help the authorities in fighting against the numerous road accidents in the country.
“Just between January and October this year, over 2300 and 12,800 people have been killed and injured respectively on our roads.
The crashes we register every day are not only reckoned in losses of lives, behind the staggering figures lies a family that has descended into abject poverty, but a community burdened by dependents and a nation also deprive of its valuable human resource,” Obiri-Yeboah said.
The campaign is an initiative that seeks to educate the public on the need to adhere to road traffic regulations.
Statistics
The crashes recorded are a 9.54% increment from last year’s record. The four regions with the highest record of crashes are Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, and Tema regions in descending order.
A total number of people who lost their lives due to road crashes is 2,380 with 81.9% being males and the remaining 18.1% being females.
