Divisions in Volta NPP; A Threat to Party’s Takeover from NDC

The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu has reiterated that the Volta region has the potential of making the NPP a party of choice in the country, however, the seeming divisions among party executives and government appointees may jeopardize that agenda.

According to him the attempt by some members in the region to separate the government from the party as though the two did not need each other was not the way to go and unacceptable.

To this end, he has called on all and sundry, thus party executives and government appointees at all levels to put their differences aside and work together like they have done in the past to increase the NPP’s votes in the region, which used to be the stronghold of the opposition NDC.

Mr. Boadu observed Ho during the party’s Volta Regional Annual Delegates’ Conference last Tuesday, October 19, 2021. His comments come in the wake of recent divisions between some regional executives led by the Chairman, Makafui Woanyah and some government appointees led by the Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa.

He recounted that the NPP in the Volta Region has come very far from being taboo for residents to be associated with it. From a time when parliamentary aspirants and constituency executives fought over resources to campaign. To a time when it has become attractive and less antagonistic to be a member of the NPP.

He was therefore not surprised to see a seamless transfer of leadership from Kenwuud Nuworsu, to John-Peter Amewu and now Makafui Woanyah; all of whom have played major roles to consistently increase the party’s votes.

The NPP Scribe noted in the 2016 election when Volta and Oti were one region, the party managed to get about 103000 votes, however in the 2020 elections when Oti was no more part of the Volta Region, the party garnered about 110000 votes in the Volta region while Oti region also gave the party about 104000 votes. That is over 100 percent increment in votes, he stressed.

He said, for a party that before the year 2000, had a hard time booking hotels for the training of its executives and members in the Volta region, “This is an excellent performance. No doubt.” This is proof that “Volta Region is the region that has the greatest potential for this party.” He stressed.

This feat has been reached by a lot of work and there is more success to be chalked but “There are apparent divisions and open disagreements amongst you.” These, he noted, must be eschewed because the party and government have a symbiotic relationship that must not be overlooked.

Mr. Boadu explained that even the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo respects this party-government relationship and hence “have attended 99.99 percent of all national steering committee meetings of the party.”

He, therefore, urged party executives and government appointees to find a way to work together to ensure a formidable front that can win additional seats to Hohoe and increase the party’s votes in the 2024 elections to ‘break the eight’, thus retain power for the third time in succession.
