Sept. 25 (UPI) — Google celebrated what would have been Christopher Reeve’s 69th birthday with a Doodle featuring the late Superman icon with a sketch of the New York City skyline behind him.

The word “Google” is spelled out in skywriting.

The New York native starred in 1978’s Superman and three sequels. His other film credits include Somewhere in Time, The Bostonians, Remains of the Day, Speechless and Village of the Damned.

Reeve broke his neck in an equestrian accident that left him a quadriplegic in 1995.

The actor used a wheelchair and ventilator for the rest of his life, but still managed to work, making public appearances to speak about his experiences and advocate for stem cell research.

He played roles in the TV series Smallville and TV movie Rear Window. He also directed the telepicture, In the Gloaming, and authored the books, Still Me and Nothing is Impossible.

He died in 2004 from an adverse reaction to a drug used to treat an infection. He was 52.
