Sept. 19 (UPI) — Tropical Storm Rose formed in the Atlantic on Sunday, becoming the 17th named storm of the 2021 hurricane season.

In an 8 p.m. CVT update, the National Hurricane Center said Rose was located 370 miles west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands.

It was carrying maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and traveling north-northwest at 16 mph.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect, but tropical-storm-force winds extend outward 35 miles from the storm’s center.

Rose is forecast to strengthen some through Monday and move to the northwest beginning Sunday night through Wednesday, the NHC said.

Environmental conditions are expected to become less conducive by Tuesday, leading to the beginning of a slow weakening trend.

Rose is joined in the Atlantic by Tropical Storm Peter, which also formed on Sunday.
