Black Stars boss Charles Akonnor has become the lastest coach involved in the African 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers to have been sacked after two matches in the group stage.

Akonnor’s contract was terminated on Monday by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following an Executive Committee meeting in Accra that lasted several hours.

Members of the powerful GFA Executive Committee reviewed Akonnor’s work since he was appointed in January 2020 and came to the conclusion to sack him alongside his two assistants David Duncan and Dutchman Patrick Greveraars.

His sacking comes 24 hours after Zimbabwe, Ghana’s next opponent in the qualifiers, sacked their head coach Zdravko Logarusic.

The Croat just like Akonnor had struggled to win the hearts of Zimbabweans despite qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon next year.

Logarusic and Akonnor become the second and third managers respectively because Egypt fired their countryman Hossam El Badry and replaced him with former Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz early last week.

Akonnor was praying to be given a chance to redeem himself when next month when Ghana play Zimbabwe in a double-header.

Ghana following the deserved defeat at South Africa are second in Group G, a point behind Bafana Bafana.
