Accra, July 16, GNA – The Ghana Mineworkers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has presented health items and educational scholarship totalling GH¢50,000.
00 to four institutions in mining communities.
The donation forms part of the Union’s contribution to the development of the human resource base and health and safety of Ghanaians in areas of its operations.
The beneficiary institutions are: OLA Girls Senior High School at Kenyase in the Ahafo Region, Patmos Children’s Home at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, Tarkwa Municipal Hospital in the Western Region, and Adausena Health Centre at New Abirem in the Eastern Region.
The OLA Girls Senior High School received hospital beds with matresses, drip stands, bedside cabinets, high blood pressure device and pulse oxymeter for use at its infirmary.
Two students from Patmos Children’s Home were offered GH¢8,000.00 scholarship per year to pursue a three-year course at the Offinso College of Education.
The Tarkwa Municipal Hospital received Cardiac Monitor for the Pediatric Unit, while the Adausena Health Centre received 55″ inch Television and Desktop Computer.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said the donations form part of activities marking the Union’s maiden Miners Week celebration, with the goal of getting closer to the people in the mining communities.
“Integrating Labour and Community interest for socio-economic development,” was the theme for the celebration.
Mr Mensah Kwarko Gyarkari, the National Chairman of the Union, at a meeting with chiefs from the beneficiary communities, said the engagement was to lead the crusade for better infrastructure for those towns.
“We need the total support of our traditional chiefs to ensure that government initiates deliberate and coordinated interventions to addressing the huge infrastructure deficit in the mining towns,” he said.
“Infrastructure in our mining communities must reflect the huge revenue generated from there.”
Mr Abdul-Moomin Gbana, the General Secretary of the Union, advised the beneficiary students to study hard for a secured future.
Emmanuella Anokye and Joshua Obeng, who received the scholarship package, expressed gratitude to the Union for the support.
