July 8 (UPI) — Three rockets landed Thursday in the Green Zone of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, military officials said.
One of the rockets landed near a compound belonging to the U.S. National Security Agency, another came down in a town square and the third in a residential neighborhood.
No injuries were reported in the attacks, military officials said, but a vehicle was destroyed by the third rocket.
Officials said none of the rockets landed near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
“Each attack … undermines the authority of Iraqi institutions, the rule of law and Iraqi national sovereignty,” Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman Col. Wayne Marotto said in a tweet.
Marotto added that such attacks “endanger the lives” of Iraqi civilians and coalition and partner forces.
The attacks were blamed on Iranian-backed Iraqi militias hoping to force U.S. troops from Iraq, where there has been a constant presence since the early 2000s.
As with Afghanistan, where nearly 90% of troops have been withdrawn, U.S. President Joe Biden is under some pressure to withdraw forces from Iraq.
