The 2021 Vodafone Ghana Awards (VGMAs) has been done and dusted and as usual, there’s a whirlwind of varied opinions trailing it with regards to who should have won what.

Gospel music torchbearer in this year’s edition, Diana Hamilton was adjudged the overall best after she won the topmost prize, Artist of the Year award.

She joins Joe Mettle in the enviable league of the only two Gospel musicians to win the coveted plaque since the inception of the VGMAs over two decades ago.

Well, so what exactly did we observe about this year’s awards that escaped you inconspicuously?

Let’s get into it.

1. VGMAs seems to have lost its gloss

Perhaps the mind blowing award show put up by 3Music awards, a rival award scheme to the VGMAs is still fresh in our faculties hence we are inappropriately using it as a yardstick to measure the VGMAs .

Admittedly what 3Music did this year during its fourth edition has never been seen in the annals of award shows in Ghana and probably on the African continent so, in that vein, we expected Charterhouse, the organizers of the VGMAs who have been around for over two decades to do better.

To some extent, the Covid-19 pandemic which limited the number of attendants took a slice of the aura away but the organizational aspect was still deficient and to some of us who had high regard for them, we felt slightly disappointed.

2. KiDi allegedly storms out after failing to land the Artist of the Year Award

KiDi was filmed allegedly storming out of the auditorium after Diana Hamilton beat him to the Artist of the Year award.

Considering how he held the industry down with three hit songs (Enjoyment, Say Cheese, One Man) which topped the charts alternatively, we understand why he was overly pissed off when this award eluded him although he was highly tipped by connoisseurs and fans to win it.

Well, we can’t vouch for the authenticity of this report but we still think he deserves it more than Diana Hamilton.

3. Abiana grabs best female vocalist of the year

Abiana is not a new artist but this is her first entry into the VGMAs and she managed to win it at the expense of the mainstream artists which is a great feat indeed.

Abiana started her career as a backing vocalist for musicians like Amanziba, Paapa Yankson, Pat Thomas, Akosua Agyepong, Becca, and others, before joining the Hyskuul Band, where she met Okyeame Kwame to work on his ‘Bolgatanga Girl’ project.

Her award is significant because like we mentioned earlier, beating mainstream artists namely Adina (Hear Me) Yaa Yaa (Mmusuo), Cina Soul (Die 4 U), Efe Grace (Lord Have Your Way) and Enuonyam, (Fill Me) was no mean achievement.

4. Less controversy this year

In fact, this is year’s event is relatively less controversial juxtaposed to what we have seen in previous years. Of course, some fans who voted for their favourite artists and expected them to win might have their own reservations but the neutrals believe this year’s award is fairly good.

The customary heckling between the various fanbases of the A-List stars across the various social media landscape is missing and in general, there seems to be no euphoria at all.

5. Kofi Kinaata makes VGMAs history

Martin King Arthur, professionally known as Kofi Kinaata became the first Ghanaian musician in the history of the VGMAs to win the Songwriter of the Year award four consecutive times.

He actually became the first person to win it three times in a row and he just bettered it this year by breaking his own record, as he put it excitedly.

He summed up his excitement in a tweet saying:

“Another One! I set a record last year.. and I’ve broken my own record this year! The only Ghanaian Flag of Ghana artiste to win the VGMA SongWriter Award for the FOURTH time! Glowing starGlowing starGlowing starGlowing star #VGMA22 #TeamMooove.”
