Makinde promises sports revival as 100 children participate in Oyo Junior Clinic

Sports in Oyo State will soon wear a new look if plans by the state government materialises.

Governor Oluseyi Makinde at the closing ceremony of the Oyo State Junior Golf Clinic at the weekend described sports as a catalyst to youth engagement, saying the realisation of its importance is responsible for his massive sports infrastructural development.     

More than 100 children between the ages of six and 17 were introduced to the game of rudiments of golf in the six-day clinic held at the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC).

According to Makinde, “sports development is a way we think we can engage youths in Oyo State. This is the reason, our government is doing everything possible to upgrade sports facilities and attract talents to them.

“I called the contractor working on the swimming pool and asked him to hasten up and deliver an Olympic standard swimming pool on time, so that we can compete favourably with other states in swimming.”

Earlier, the Initiator of the clinic, Tobi Oyewumi, who is also the Special Assistant to Governor Makinde on Sports Development, earned praises from the Captain of Ibadan Golf Club, Mr. Ola Ibironke, who also commended the governor for remodeling Lekan Salami Stadium.

In his speech at the event, Oyewumi stressed the importance of golf in the wellbeing of men and women, explaining that he organised the golf clinic to discover and nurture talents.

He thanked Governor Makinde for supporting him and for giving him the opportunity to serve young people in his administration.

“I know the importance of discovering young talents. That is why we are organising this golf clinic, with the support of the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde. I believe the clinic will help sharpen the skills of young golfers, who participated in this exercise. I urge these young golfers to utilize what they learned at this one week clinic,” Oyewumi said.

He announced that the clinic and tournament would be a yearly event, adding that it would boost golf in the state, which won its first National Sports Festival medal in the golf event in 15 years at Edo 2020.

The winners, including Segun Ibironke, who led the pack in the age 13 to 17 category, were presented with gifts and trophies.
