Policy think tank IMANI Africa and the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) have petitioned Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Asanteman Traditional Council to mediate in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to compile a new voter register for the December 7 polls.

According to the group, the EC’s decision to compile a new voter register is incessantly creating tension in the country, hence the need for them to intervene.

They thus, want the Asantehene, and the council to have a say by calling the EC and the disturbed political parties to reach a common decision to forestall any future troubles.

The group further noted that, do not want any Ghanaian to be disenfranchised even if the exercise goes ahead as planned by the EC.

The EC will later this month compile a new voter register for the 2020 general elections.

The largest opposition Party, the National Democratic Congress- NDC have accused the EC of alluding with the governing New Patriotic Party [NPP], to rig the 2020 general election. But the  NPP’s campaign manager, Peter Mac Manu, has vehemently watered down the allegation, insisting they don’t need the Electoral Commission’s help to defeat the John Mahama-led NDC at the time that they are in power.
