Former Hearts of Oak skipper Amankwah Mireku believes that it will be impossible for coach Edward Nii Odoom to emulate the late Jones Attuquayefio’s success at the club.

The late Sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio led the Phobians to two major African titles- the 2000 CAF Champions League and maiden CAF Confederation Cup in 2004.

The 70-year-old was named African Coach of the Year in 2000, having lost only once throughout the entire Champions League.

The Accra-based side paid tribute to late coach Attuquayefio on Monday, to mark the fifth anniversary of his demise.

Amankwah Mireku, who played and captained the team under Attuquayefio says the club’s current coach cannot emulate the success of Attuquayefio.

“Yes in Football coaches are important but for me, Football is all about players, players make coaches not coaches making players so you look at the calibre of players the late Attuquayefio worked with and now the players, coach Odoom is working with, it makes it impossible,” he told Oyerepa FM.

“To ask coach Odoom to emulate the late Cecil Jones Attuquayefio in winning laurels will be impossible, it will be a herculean task for me.

“Winning the league has even become a problem but we won it six times, with this crop of players its impossible. It’s not about coach Odoom but the quality of players,” he concluded.

Hearts of Oak have not won any major trophy in over a decade since winning their 20th league title in 2009.
