Ghana’s amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers will later today leave for their qualifier for the 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo later this year.

The Africa Qualifiers which will be held in Dakar, Senegal will ensure that the continent presents its best prospect to the multi-sports event and Ghana will be hoping that many of its boxers will make the grade to be eligible to compete in Tokyo.

Over the weekend the Bombers held a media workout in Accra where they opened their doors to the media to come and see how far their preparations have gone ahead of the qualifiers.

A total of fifteen boxers trained at the Bukom Boxing Arena under the supervision of their head coach, Ofori Asare during the media workout.

The boxers were taken through drills and other workouts to put them in shape for the tournament which commences on February 20 to 29, 2020 at the Dakar International Expo Centre, Diamniadio.

Speaking to the media after the session, Head coach of the team, Ofori Asare said although the preparations have not been all smooth-sailing, he is confident his lads are ready for the task ahead in Dakar, Senegal.

“We keep trying to bring up the best in the boxers because we are close to the competition. We’ve gone through all the necessary technical aspect we have to go through. They are physically and psychologically ready,” coach Ofori Asare told the media.

The Black Bombers have been in camp for the last three months prepping up for the tournament and are expected to leave the country today for the competition which commences on February 20 to 29, 2020 at the International Expo Centre, Diamniadio.

The team started their non-residential camping at the Accra Sports Stadium but later moved to the Bukom Boxing Arena which is well equipped with the facilities needed to shape the team for the competition ahead.

The coach further added that moving to the Bukom Boxing Arena has been essential to finalizing preparations for the team

“The difficulties are numerous but for the finishing, we’ve been able to get the Boxing Arena where we are preparing and I can say we are battle-ready.” Ten boxers made up of 8 male and 2 female boxers will be representing Ghana in Dakar. Four boxers represented Ghana at the last Olympics in Rio under the stewardship of coach Ofori Asare.
