A former Vice Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Nana Yaw Owusu Akwanuasa, has implored club officials to desist from offering special treatment to match officials who handle their home matches.

He said it was equally important for football fans to refrain from doing anything that would undermine GFA’s quest to lift Ghana football to an appreciable level.

Describing the standard of play of the ongoing Premier League as average, he expressed the hope that the standard would improve as the league progressed.

“The Ghana Premier League has resumed in earnest and results recorded so far are very encouraging.

“At this point in time, I am appealing to club officials to refrain from doing anything that would induce match officials to handle matches in their favour during competitive matches.

Standard of officiating

“Officiating at the various league centres, by all standards, is above average. We should, therefore, continue with this trend, and my advice to club officials is that they should desist from inviting referees and giving them VIP treatment when they arrive at their centres,” Nana Akwanuasa told the Daily Graphic .

“I am saying this because it is such VIP treatments that induce referees to handle matches in their favour to undermine the competitiveness of the league. In doing so, we are unable to produce a worthy champion to represent Ghana at the international level,” Nana Yaw Owusu noted.

He also advised football lovers to offer the GFA more room to manage the league and desist from looking for errors just to run down the association’s quest to develop Ghana football to an appreciable standard.
