font-size: 11pt;\">Accra, Jan. 9, GNA &#8211; Building and civil<br \/>\nengineering contractors say they are ready to collaborate with government to<br \/>\nfulfil its infrastructure agenda in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The leadership said members of the<br \/>\nAssociation are preparing themselves to play active role in the various<br \/>\ninfrastructure projects to be undertaken in the coming years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr Prosper Yao Ledi, the President of the<br \/>\nAssociation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana (ABCECG),<br \/>\nmade these comments at the Association\u2019s end of year get-together to take stock<br \/>\nof the past year and strategise for the coming years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Indigenous contractors have long complained<br \/>\nabout unlevelled playing field and neglect by governments in preference to<br \/>\ntheir foreign counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">While conceding that some indigenous players<br \/>\nhave acted in ways that have negatively affected their image, the President of<br \/>\nABCECG argued that the work of a few bad nuts should not define all of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr Ledi said the Association has proactively<br \/>\nbegun engaging key stakeholders to procure state-of-the-art equipment that<br \/>\nwould be available to members to enable them to undertake major projects in the<br \/>\ncountry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He said the initiative has resulted in two<br \/>\ncompanies; United States based John Deere and China FAW Group, supporting the<br \/>\nAssociation with relevant equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cOur agenda is to secure very relevant<br \/>\nmachinery so that our members can hire them to undertake major projects, so<br \/>\ngovernment should recognise our readiness and work with us\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">There has been a series of Made in Ghana<br \/>\ncampaigns in recent times, the most recent being a drive for the consumption of<br \/>\nGhana rice; Mr Ledi lauded the advocacy campaign, adding that such a campaign<br \/>\nmust be comprehensive and extend to all sectors, so that Ghana\u2019s products and<br \/>\nservices will be preferred ahead of foreign counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cIf we have to stop the perennial<br \/>\ndepreciation of the cedi and high unemployment, then the Made in Ghana campaign<br \/>\nmust cover everything and we are putting our house in order for that to<br \/>\nhappen\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">A few months ago, Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, the<br \/>\nMinister for Works and Housing, endorsed efforts to make membership of<br \/>\ncontractor associations a prerequisite to qualify for contracts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">This endorsement is yielding the needed<br \/>\nresult as a number of building contractors are going through the process to<br \/>\neither renew their membership of ABCECG or apply for membership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The ABCECG President commended foreign<br \/>\ncontractors who are registered with the Association saying their action is<br \/>\nworthy of emulation and urged other foreign construction firms operating in the<br \/>\ncountry to comply and get registered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Delayed payments and non-payments of<br \/>\ninterest on delayed arrears have been major challenges that contractors have<br \/>\nbeen battling over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr Ledi said the pain of the arrears are<br \/>\ndebilitating and that the Association would continue to engage government to<br \/>\nend the practice, adding that it was a major agenda for the coming year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The ABCECG President said 2020 would also be<br \/>\nused to pursue the setting up of the Construction Industry Development<br \/>\nAuthority, which he explained, has been on the drawing board for far too long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cThe building and civil engineering<br \/>\ncontractors are hopeful of a better year and will do all that is within their<br \/>\npower to be credible partners in the development of the country\u2019s<br \/>\ninfrastructure,\u201d Mr Ledi added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;mso-fareast-font-family:&#10;Calibri;mso-ansi-language:EN-GB;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-bidi-language:&#10;AR-SA\">GNA<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Accra, Jan. 9, GNA &#8211;
