Accra, Jan. 9, GNA \u2013 Traders at the Centre
\nfor National Culture also known as the Art Centre Craft Market in Accra have
\napplauded the government for initiating the \u2018Year of Return\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Kodjo Mensah, Manager of Mama Heritage
\nShop at the Art Centre, told the Ghana News Agency\u00a0in an interview on
\nThursday that patronage at the centre during the period was tremendous and had
\na positive impact on their business and finances. <\/span><\/p>\n

He said the return of fellow Africans
\nignited dynamism in business activities at the centre; \u201cthe Returnees invaded
\nthe centre all day round forcing traders to go beyond the normal closing time
\nof 17:00 hours. Even traders who traditionally closed at 17:00 hours had to
\nstay till 20:00 hours\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Mensah said very good sales were made and
\nthat one customer could buy a number of art works, cloth and jewelry. \u201cThe
\ngovernment should bring them back, because their coming served as a platform to
\nunite Ghana and America.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe can learn a lot from them; if black
\npeople can also look good like this then we here can also become like them\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Madam Genevieve Klu, a sales person at the
\nshop, said the initiative by the government was a good one, which brought about
\n80 per cent boost to sales as compared to previous years. <\/span><\/p>\n

She urged the government to make the Year of
\nReturn an annual event, which should be observed by all governments.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVery excellent, we have enjoyed it very
\nmuch, everybody in the craft market enjoyed; as you can see my shop is almost
\nempty, I must be frank with you the organisers have done well seriously,\u201d Mr
\nIssaka Sulemana of Ila Sulaman Enterprise stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said before the return, business at the
\nart market was dead with less patronage but the visitors over the period bought
\na lot of beads, jewelries, leather works, and some brass works.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahmed Mohammed of Shop No 118 at the Centre
\nsaid business at the Centre had been revived and even though most of his
\ncarvings were not bought because of their weight, the visitors patronised his
\nbrass ornaments and sculpture.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Year of Return was declared by the
\nPresident Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Washington Press Club, in
\nWashington D.C., on September 2018, to serve as a major landmark, spiritual and
\nbirth-right journey inviting the African family from across the globe home, to
\nmark 400 years of the arrival in 1619 of the first 20 enslaved Africans in
\nJamestown, Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The visit of about 200,000 African Diasporas
\nto the soils of their ancestors was a year-long initiative with intense
\nactivities and participation within the Christmas festivities and the early
\npart of the New Year.<\/span><\/p>\n
