About 29<br \/>\nelectricity poles belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have been<br \/>\nburnt by bushfires in the Keta Municipality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">A total of ten poles have been burnt along<br \/>\nthe sea defence stretch of the Keta-Havedzi road but there are no power<br \/>\ninterruptions in the Municipality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">In all, 21 high tension poles and eight low<br \/>\nvoltage poles were destroyed, with some left hanging at knee level posing<br \/>\ndanger to lives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr Godwin Gone, Keta District Manager,<br \/>\nElectricity Company of Ghana said bushfires on December 30th 2019 through to<br \/>\nJanuary 1, 2020, which necessitated the assistance of fire fighters, were so<br \/>\ndisastrous and came at a cost to the Company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He said he was surprised at the occurrence<br \/>\nbecause \u201cthere are no farmlands or thick bushes around Keta-Adzido and<br \/>\nKedzi-Vodza areas for people to burn bushes for hunting&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The District Manager described the incident<br \/>\nas unfortunate and appealed to residents in the Keta Municipality to desist<br \/>\nfrom indiscriminate setting of fire to bushes during dry seasons, so as not to<br \/>\nplunge the area into darkness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr Gone said there must be caution when<br \/>\nsetting fires during harmattan periods because they could lead to unforeseen or<br \/>\nunintended disasters with far reaching consequences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He said the Company was working at replacing<br \/>\nthe poles and to ensure that power was not interrupted.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr Benjamin Obeng Antwi, Public Relations<br \/>\nOfficer, ECG, Volta Region, said the incident had been reported to the police<br \/>\nand was hopeful the culprits would be arrested and prosecuted. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He said ECG was creating fire belts around<br \/>\nthe poles and replacing some with steel tubular poles in Volta and Oti Regions<br \/>\nto avoid such occurrences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr Antwi also lamented about the increasing<br \/>\ncases of cable theft in Keta, especially around the Nursing Training College<br \/>\nand called for support from the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">GNA<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ewoenam Koodo, GNA\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Keta (V\/R), Jan. 09, GNA &#8211;
