Accra, Jan. 9, GNA \u2013 The Youth Volunteers
\nfor the Environment (YVE Ghana) has called for a survey to be conducted on
\neucalyptus plantations in Ghana, which was introduced by African Plantations
\nfor Sustainable Development (APSD), a Norwegian company.<\/span><\/p>\n

The APSD chose Atebubu Community in the Bono
\nAhafo Region to plant eucalyptus trees for the production of electricity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The YVE Ghana made the call in a statement
\nafter it had paid a visit to the Atebubu Community.<\/span><\/p>\n

It said in 2009, the APSD secured access to
\nabout 42,000 hectares of land in Brong Ahafo Region and \u201cnine thousand hectares
\nhave already been planted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The release noted that about 22,000 hectares
\nof eucalyptus plantations will be needed to guarantee an annual supply of
\n600,000 m3 of logs,\u201d adding that \u201cthis amount of wood is needed to fire a 60 MW
\npower plant that is planned to be operational in 2021\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The release suggested that \u201cIt would be
\nhelpful if a local non-governmental organization (NGO) could conduct an on the
\nground survey that takes into account the views of all stakeholders, and
\nparticularly women as they are disproportionately impacted by such schemes\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project was being sponsored by Erling
\nLoventzen, the founder of the Brazilian pulp and paper company, Aracruz
\nCellulose (which became Fibra and has since merged with Suzano, another big
\nBrazilian pulp and paper company.)<\/span><\/p>\n
