Bawku (UE) Jan.8,
\nGNA – Livestock and Vegetable farmers in some communities in the Bawku area
\nhave started making good use of the dams constructed under the one Village one
\ndam policy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Farmers have
\nstarted preparing lands for irrigation farming while their livestock have
\nsource of drinking water.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Farmers in five
\nCommunities in the Bawku Municipality, four in Garu, three in Bawku West, four
\nin\u00a0 Binduri and five in the Pusiga
\ndistricts are currently using the dams for irrigation this dry season with the
\noptimism that they would produce enough food to enhance food security in the
\narea.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are growing
\nOnion, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Carrots, cabbage and green leafy vegetables.<\/span><\/p>\n

Others are also
\ncultivating groundnuts, rice and maize.<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea of the
\npolicy by government was to encourage all year round farming in the northern
\npart of the country, with each District to benefit from ten dams. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hajia Hawa
\nNinchemah, the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), speaking in an interview
\nwith the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday in Bawku, lauded the policy as it
\nhad begun to provide jobs and would soon increase the income of the farmers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the projects
\nin all the districts are completed the dams will encourage many people to do
\nall year farming and rear as many animals as they want due to the availability
\nof water and thus ensure food security in the area\u201d, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said out of the
\nten dams ear-marked for the Municipality, five were completed and being used
\nwhile two were 80 per cent complete and three were at a tender stage of
\nconstruction.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs you know the
\nBawku area is an agricultural hub noted for its vegetable production and the
\ndams will be of much help to many\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Paul Azumah
\nAbugri, the District Chief Executive for Tempane said the dams in his district
\nwere much appreciated as it would boost both crop and animal production, \u201cthis
\narea is a potential livestock farming area that would complement the Rearing
\nfor Food and Jobs programme\u201d, he added. <\/span><\/p>\n

He said the
\nprovision of human development policies that would project the welfare of the
\ncitizenry was a priority to government and it was rolling out proactive
\npolicies that would ensure quality livelihood of the people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Mohammed Paeda, a
\nVegetable and livestock farmer at the Kolnaba community in the Pusiga district
\nlauded the flagship programmes and said his livestock would no longer roam in
\nsearch of water since the community had a dam to provide water for the animals.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said most of
\ntheir livestock such as cattle, goats, and sheep among others formerly had to
\ntrek long distances in search of water and that exposed them to thieves.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n
