Accra, Jan. 8, GNA \u2013
\nThe Convention People\u2019s Party (CPP) on Wednesday called on government to
\ncommemorate January 8, as a \u2018Sacred Day\u2019 on the national calendar as it marks
\nthe beginning of the country\u2019s independence struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n

It said it was on
\nthat important day in January 8, 1950 that Positive Action Day which ignited
\nthe independence struggle began.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CPP explained
\nthat the January 8 was observed as a Red-Letter Day and a critical moment,
\nwhich enabled workers, farmers, youth, men, women, chiefs and all sections of
\nsociety united and mobilized against the usurpers and foreign occupiers of the
\nnative land.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWeapons used to
\ndemand independence were strikes, boycotts, and non-cooperation based upon the
\nprinciple of non-violence,\u201d Mr James Kwabena Bomfeh Junior, CPP Acting
\nSecretary-General, said in Accra to mark the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said the call for
\n\u2018self-government now\u2019 by the CPP led by its Founder, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah,
\nwas achieved because of organisation, hence it deserves a place on the national
\ncalendar roll of honour for sacred days in the nation\u2019s history.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CPP organised a
\nmedia engagement to set the tone for national observation of the Sacred Day \u2013
\n\u201cPositive Action which meant the application of constitutional and legitimate
\nmeans to cripple the imperialist forces in the country,\u201d Mr Bomfeh Jr quoted
\nOsagyefo Dr Nkrumah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking about the
\nobservance of the \u2018Constitution Day\u2019 on January 7, he said, the Fourth
\nRepublican Constitution despite being the longest to survive in the history of
\nthe country was fraught with many fundamental paradoxes, which made any
\neffective function a mirage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday,
\norganisations are messing in our partisan and national lives and in its place
\ndisorganised chaos appeared to be taking us hostage. We must evolve a new
\ndynamic people\u2019s party that is conscious of the needs and aspirations of her
\npeople and diligently works to meet them,\u201d The CPP Acting Secretary-General
\nsaid.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CPP, he said,
\nwas declaring a positive action against corruption, as generally, their
\nthinking was warped, corrupted and deeply immersed in unbridled and
\nunrestrained selfishness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf as individuals,
\nwe shall each exhibit attitudes of non-cooperation, intolerance, abhorrence,
\ndisgust and opprobrium to corrupt practices, no matter how pervasive or endemic
\nthey may be, we shall succeed. Once we uproot corruption from our daily lives,
\nwe shall experience fearless honest lives the national anthem invites us to,\u201d
\nhe said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Bomfeh Jnr called
\non the public to give the Party a listening ear to enable it to advocate and
\ninfluence policy making to enhance their welfare.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hajia Hamdatu
\nIbrahim, CPP Acting Chairperson, urged members of the Party not to allow
\nthemselves to be used as tools for violence and destruction in the upcoming
\ngeneral election.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe CPP wants to
\nwin power but not through violence means. Violence is not in our DNA as CPP is
\nall about sharing ideas,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Benard Mornah,
\nthe National Chairman of the Peoples National Convention, commended the CPP for
\nits positive and bold step to promote the interest of the citizenry.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said it is time
\nfor the other political parties to save the people from the two major political
\nparties that were taking the people for a setback \u2018ride\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n
