The virus<br \/>\nis transmitted by person to person spread mainly through the faecal-oral route<br \/>\nor less frequently, by a common vehicle such as contaminated food and water and<br \/>\nmultiplies in the intestines from where it can invade the nervous system and<br \/>\ncause paralysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Initial symptoms of<br \/>\npolio include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting and stiffness in the neck and<br \/>\npain in the limbs. There is no cure for polio, and it can only be prevented by<br \/>\nimmunization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Last year, the GHS<br \/>\nreported several cases from Chereponi, in the North East Region, Kumbungu, and<br \/>\nSavelugu in the Northern Region, Central Gonja in the newly-created Savanna<br \/>\nRegion and Nkwanta North in the newly-created Oti Region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">In the Bono, Bono<br \/>\nEast and Ahafo Regions, two of three children who were infected died whilst the<br \/>\nother victim survived with some level of paralysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Cases were reported<br \/>\nfrom Asiri community in the Jaman North District of the Bono, Sissalaline in<br \/>\nthe Techiman Municipality of Bono East and Kwasuso community in the Asutifi<br \/>\nSouth District of the Ahafo regions where 24-month-old girl, 33-month-old-girl<br \/>\nand 37-month old boy were infected respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Addressing a news<br \/>\nconference in Sunyani, Dr John Ekow Otoo, Deputy Director, Public Health at the<br \/>\nBono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Health Directorate said the Ministry of<br \/>\nHealth (MoH), GHS and its partners had developed a plan to break transmission<br \/>\nand contain the poliovirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He explained the<br \/>\nconfirmation of the Polio Type Two virus in Ghana led to a declaration of<br \/>\nPublic Health Emergency of National Concern by the MoH.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Throwing more light<br \/>\non the vaccination campaign, Dr Otoo said three rounds of the exercise had been<br \/>\nplanned, and appealed to parents and guardians to cooperate with the<br \/>\nvaccination teams and ensure all eligible children were vaccinated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The team involved in<br \/>\nthe campaign would move from house to house, schools and fixed-post stations at<br \/>\nhealth facilities while the left finger of children vaccinated would be marked<br \/>\nwith an indelible marker and all houses entered by vaccinating teams would be<br \/>\nmarked as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Already, Dr Otoo<br \/>\nexplained a round zero reactive vaccination campaign was organised from<br \/>\nDecember 19 to December 22, last year, in six selected Districts \u2013 Banda,<br \/>\nBerekum, Berekum West, Jaman North, Jaman South and Tain in the Bono Region and<br \/>\n101,242 children were vaccinated, a coverage of 98.3 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">GNA\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Dennis Peprah, GNA Sunyani, Jan. 08, GNA \u2013 The Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Wednesday started supplementary vaccination exercise to protect children against poliomyelitis in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions.
