lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The Department for<br \/>\nInternational Development (DFID) said: \u201cIt is not the case that giving aid to a<br \/>\ncountry with high levels of corruption is the same as giving aid to that<br \/>\ncountry\u2019s government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">DFID was responding<br \/>\nto the latest British newspaper story criticising the UK government\u2019s<br \/>\ncommitment to spend 0.7 per cent of its GDP each year on foreign aid, as<br \/>\nrecommended by the UN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">This became law in<br \/>\n2015, making the UK just one of a handful of developed countries that are<br \/>\nmeeting the UN target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Only Sweden (1.01<br \/>\nper cent), Luxembourg (one per cent), Norway (0.99 per cent) and Denmark (0.72<br \/>\nper cent) give more in foreign aid as a percentage of GDP than the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Last year, UK<br \/>\ngovernment budgeted \u00a314 billion for international aid, equivalent to 0.7 per<br \/>\ncent of the country\u2019s GDP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">A DFID spokesman<br \/>\nsaid: \u201cUK aid only goes to trusted partners to help those living in extreme<br \/>\npoverty, not directly to the governments of the most corrupt countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cDFID has strict<br \/>\nmeasures in place to protect [UK] taxpayers\u2019 money, including regular audits<br \/>\nand fraud assessments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cOur approach to<br \/>\ninternational development is just one example of how the government is<br \/>\nprotecting and promoting our national security and global influence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">DFID said UK aid was<br \/>\n\u201csaving lives in countries such as South Sudan, Somalia and Yemen that are home<br \/>\nto some of the poorest people in the world\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The DFID statement<br \/>\nadded: \u201cWe have always been clear that by working in the most fragile and<br \/>\ndangerous parts of the world, UK aid makes this country safe by tackling<br \/>\nproblems which would otherwise arrive on our doorstep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cDFID has strict<br \/>\nprocesses in place to ensure UK aid is not misspent or diverted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cThese include due<br \/>\ndiligence assessments of partners, fraud risk assessments, risk monitoring<br \/>\nduring projects \u2013 such as monitoring visits and financial spot checks \u2013 and<br \/>\nregular independent project audits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"
