Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia <\/strong><\/p>\nVice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has
\nannounced that the controversial 116 kilometre Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road
\nwill be completed by the end of July 2020.<\/p>\n
According to the Vice President, the Brazilian
\ncontractor working on the road, Queiroz Galv\u00e3o, has promised to work harder and
\nfaster, adding, \u201c\u2026On my way here, I stopped to have a word with the
\ncontractor and inspect work done so far. The contractor has assured that by
\nJuly 2020 the road will be completed.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was speaking at the climax of the 32nd
\nSamanpiid Festival in Bawku recently where he also donated an amount of GH\u00a210,000
\nto the Bawku Naba Educational Fund and another GH\u00a220,000 and assorted drinks to
\nsupport the festival.<\/p>\n
Samanpiid is a harvest and thanksgiving
\nfestival celebrated by the Kusasis in the Bawku Traditional Area. It is a
\nperiod to take stock and resolve to change what doesn\u2019t promote development,
\nunity and the progress of the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This year, a total of 33 sub-chiefs and 25 divisional
\nchiefs within the Bawku Traditional Area attended the durbar. <\/p>\n
A 60-member delegation from the Asantehene also
\nattended the festival for the first time at the invitation of Zug-Raan Bawku,
\nNaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.<\/p>\n
Touching on education, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that
\nit has not been easy implementing the Free Senior High School programme, but
\nwas quick to give an assurance that government was committed to ensuring that many
\nmore Ghanaian children gain secondary education to lessen the burden on
\nparents.<\/p>\n
He was hopeful that efforts and investments by government in the
\neducation sector \u2012 especially
\nin the area of secondary education across the country \u2012 would lead to ending the track system.<\/p>\n
Dr. Bawumia said government was expanding and
\nrehabilitating old dams and constructing small dams across the north to ensure
\nan all-year round farming to enable households to make money to attend to their
\nbasic needs.<\/p>\n
The Vice President said with the investments
\nbeing made into agriculture, there is bound to be high yields, hence the need
\nfor warehouses to keep the excess food for future use and sales.<\/p>\n
Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II also commended the
\ngovernment for the investment made in agriculture in the area and reminded
\ngovernment to fulfill its promise to construct a warehouse for farmers to store
\ntheir excess produce.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also called on government to release more
\nfunding to the contractor working on the Tamne Dam to enable the company to work
\nfaster and complete it before the next rainy season.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the pilot phase of the \u2018rearing
\nfor food\u2019 programme did not cover the Bawku Municipality, for which reason the paramount
\nchief of Bawku called on government to extend the programme to the Bawku
\nTraditional Area to benefit the many small scale animal farmers in the area.<\/p>\n
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, who represented the six MPs from the Bawku Traditional Area, called on government to finish all ongoing projects in the area of education, health, agriculture and the rural electrification programme, which he said have come to a halt.<\/p>\n
