Accra, Jan. 8, GNA –
\nPresident Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has applauded Ghanaians for helping to
\ndeliver a successful ‘Year of Return’ programme.<\/span><\/p>\n

“On behalf of
\nGovernment, I extend sincere, heartfelt gratitude to the people of Ghana for
\nhelping to make the \u2018Year of Return\u2019 a great success,” he said in a
\nstatement. <\/span><\/p>\n

“The welcoming
\nattitude and the warm Ghanaian hospitality proved to be the strongest
\nattraction to hundreds of thousands of our kith and kin from the African
\nDiaspora, who thronged our shores to commemorate the \u2018Year of Return\u2019. The
\nproverbial Ghanaian hospitality won once more.” <\/span><\/p>\n

President
\nAkufo-Addo, in September 2018, proclaimed 2019 as the “Year of
\nReturn” at the Washington Press Club, in Washington D.C., as a major
\nlandmark spiritual and birth-right journey inviting the Global African family,
\nhome and abroad, to mark 400 years of the arrival in 1619 of the first 20
\nenslaved Africans in Jamestown, Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Year of Return
\nCharter celebrated the cumulative resilience of all the victims of the
\nTrans-Atlantic Slave Trade who were scattered and displaced through the world
\nin North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The initiative aimed
\nto position Ghana as a key travel destination for African Americans and the
\nAfrican Diaspora, and also as a medium to engage all persons of African descent
\nmore positively in areas such as trade and investment cooperation and skills
\nand knowledge development. <\/span><\/p>\n

President Akufo-Addo
\nsaid: \u201cThe \u2018Year of Return\u2019 proved exciting and afforded us the chance to
\nre-establish, intensify and solidify the relations between those of us on the
\nContinent and those in the Diaspora.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“They felt very
\nwelcomed, enjoyed their stay with us, and, as a result, our country is, once
\nagain, the toast not only of Africa but also of the world,” he said. <\/span><\/p>\n

The President
\nfurther saluted the heads, officers and men of the security services for their
\nsense of professionalism and dedication to duty, which enabled them to preserve
\nthe peace and security of the country in the course of the celebration. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBy the grace of
\nGod, no untoward incident occurred.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“As we begin
\nthe new initiative of \u201cBeyond the Return,\u201d which will entail that we engage in
\nmutually beneficial trade, investment and cultural cooperation with the African
\nDiaspora, I urge all Ghanaians to demonstrate this same level of excitement and
\ncommitment that characterised the Year of Return and help make it also an
\nenduring success.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

“Together, I am
\nconfident that we can imbibe in ourselves a deep consciousness and
\nunderstanding of the goals and history of the African peoples to ensure that
\nthe 21st century is, indeed, the African century, the century of black people
\nthe world over,” the President said. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Year of Return
\nattracted more than 200,000 people from the African Diaspora and estimated to
\nhave generated over 1.5 billion dollars through related activities into Ghana’s
\neconomy in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

The campaign was
\nwell received by the Diaspora as President Akufo-Addo personally travelled to
\nthe Americas and the Caribbean to promote the programme. <\/span><\/p>\n

The year-long
\ninitiative culminated in a series of activities, including a music festival, an
\ninvestment conference targeting diaspora Ghanaians, and the Right to Return
\nInitiative, encouraging African-Americans to seek citizenship in Ghana.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some 126 Africans in
\nthe Diaspora were granted Ghanaian citizenship as part of the Year of Return
\ncampaign last November. <\/span><\/p>\n
