{"id":777760,"date":"2020-01-07T13:45:35","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T13:45:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2020\/01\/07\/ghana-ranked-142-on-human-development-index\/"},"modified":"2020-01-07T13:45:35","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T13:45:35","slug":"ghana-ranked-142-on-human-development-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/01\/07\/ghana-ranked-142-on-human-development-index\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana Ranked 142 On Human Development Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Kordzo Sedegah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Development<br \/>\nProgramme (UNDP) has named Ghana among 12 other African countries in the medium<br \/>\ndevelopment group of the 2019 Human Development Report which seeks to measure<br \/>\nthe socioeconomic progress of countries.<\/p>\n<p>With a global ranking of 142<br \/>\nout of 189 countries and a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.596, Ghana joined<br \/>\nthe group that included other African countries like Angola, Cape Verde,<br \/>\nCameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Kenya, Namibia, Sao Tome and<br \/>\nPrincipe, Zambia and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having an HDI which was<br \/>\nbelow an average of 0.634 for countries in the medium human development group,<br \/>\nGhana was above an average of 0.541 for countries in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights of the report which<br \/>\nwas titled, \u201cBeyond income, beyond averages, beyond today: Inequalities in<br \/>\nhuman development in the 21st century\u201d indicated that while gaps in basic<br \/>\nliving standards are narrowing with unprecedented number of people escaping poverty,<br \/>\nhunger and diseases, new equalities in terms of access to tertiary education,<br \/>\nseismic effect of technology and climate crisis are emerging.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a media briefing in<br \/>\nAccra on Thursday, UNDP Economic Specialist, Kordzo Sedegah, explained that comparison<br \/>\nof performance among countries should be along similarities in demographic such<br \/>\nas population size.<\/p>\n<p>He, therefore, said that Ghana<br \/>\nhad performed well as compared to countries with similar size of population<br \/>\nlike Cameroon and Kenya who were ranked 150 and 147 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>He also explained that a<br \/>\ncountry may be ranked lower despite recording an increase in HDI from previous<br \/>\nranking as a result of competitiveness among other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The report also highlighted<br \/>\nthat between 1990 and 2018, Ghana\u2019s life expectancy at birth had increased by<br \/>\n7.0 years from 56.8 years in 1990 to 63.8 years in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>According to a UNDP statement, \u201cMean<br \/>\nyears of schooling increased by 2.3 years from 4.9 years in 1990 to 7.2 years<br \/>\nin 2018. Expected years of schooling increased by 3.9 years. Ghana\u2019s Gross<br \/>\nnational Income (GNI) per capita increased by about 120 per cent between 1990<br \/>\nand 2018 from $1863 to $4099.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frederick Mugisha, who is a<br \/>\nUNDP Economic advisor, called for a rethink in how to build resilient local<br \/>\neconomies and measure human progress.<\/p>\n<p>He cited an example by saying<br \/>\nthat a measure for long and healthy life should be about expanding<br \/>\nopportunities for people to avoid premature death and disability rather than<br \/>\nlife expectancy while \u201caccess to knowledge should be about broadening the<br \/>\nhorizon of what is possible, not just years of schooling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn measuring decent standard<br \/>\nof living, we need to move beyond basic needs to a life of genuine choice and<br \/>\nfreedom,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Seychelles with a ranking of 62 and an HDI<br \/>\nof 0.801 has for the first time joined other African countries that included Botswana,<br \/>\nGabon, Mauritius and South Africa high in the high human development group of<br \/>\nthe report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Issah Mohammed <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kordzo Sedegah The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has named Ghana among 12 other African countries in the medium development group of the 2019 Human Development Report which seeks to measure the socioeconomic progress of countries.
