GOVERNMENT
\nHAS indicated it will establish the \u201cAfrican Sankofa Savings Account\u201d, a Diasporan
\ninvestment and savings fund, to provide investment opportunities for the
\nDiaspora Community worldwide.<\/p>\n

Ken
\nOfori\u2013Atta, Minister for Finance, who disclosed this at a press briefing
\nrecently in Accra, said the fund would welcome both high and low income earners
\nin the Diaspora who wanted to invest in their homeland.<\/p>\n

According
\nto him, that would present another source of revenue for Ghana, where the funds
\n\u201cwould be invested in tourism infrastructure, agriculture value addition, real
\nestates, music, culture, retirement homes, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted
\nthat the fund had the potential of raising about three billion dollars within a
\nyear or two, with the yield results moving beyond what traditional exports were
\nearning currently.<\/p>\n

He said his
\noutfit, Bank of Ghana and Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) were
\ncollaborating and working on the modalities, which are expected to be made
\npublic soon.<\/p>\n

Minister of
\nTourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Barbara Oteng Gyasi, has lauded the project
\nsaying, one of the seven pillars government has adopted in \u2018Beyond the Year of
\nReturn\u2019 was to create investment opportunities for the Diasporans and establish
\nthe Sankofa fund. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Describing
\nactivities which marked the Year of Return as successful, she said the private
\nsector should desist from needlessly increasing the price of their goods and
\nservices, since that could distract tourists to other destinations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some
\nAfricans from the Diaspora who have lived in Ghana for a number of years who
\nwere present at the event lauded the government for the initiative. They said
\nthey were ready to support government initiatives that would bring more Diasporan
\ninvestors and visitors back home.<\/p>\n

The \u201cYear
\nof Return, Ghana 2019\u201d is a major landmark and birth-right journey inviting the
\nGlobal African family, home and abroad, to mark 400 years of the arrival of the
\nfirst enslaved Africans in Jamestown, Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Close to a
