LEADERSHIP
\nof the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) has urged the
\ncommittee established to resolve the issues that led to the sub-region\u2019s
\nbiggest economy, Nigeria, closing its borders with Benin, to speed up its work.<\/p>\n

A
\ncommunique issued after the 56th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Authority of Heads
\nof State and Government, held over the weekend in Nigeria, acknowledged that
\nthe implementation of the regional bloc\u2019s protocol on free trade and movement
\nof people had faced challenges that needed to be resolved.<\/p>\n

The
\ncommunique urged the committee, the Tripartite Ministerial Committee comprising
\nof Benin, Nigeria, and Niger, to \u201cquickly conclude its work in order to resolve
\nall existing border issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

In
\nOctober, Nigeria \u2013 which shares boundaries with Benin, Niger and Cameroon \u2013
\nclosed all of its land borders to the movement of goods in a bid to tackle
\nsmuggling.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll
\ngoods, for now, are banned from being exported or imported through our land
\nborders and that is to ensure we have total control over what comes in,\u201d Hameed
\nAli, the comptroller-general of the Nigerian Customs Services, told journalists
\nin Abuja in October.<\/p>\n

The
\nNigerian government had initially imposed a partial closure of its borders in
\nAugust to facilitate a joint operation named Swift Response, involving customs,
\nimmigration, police and army officers. The borders will now remain closed until
\nat least January 31.<\/p>\n

Impact on Ghana<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

According
\nto the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), goods worth millions of Cedis
\nbelonging to Ghanaian manufacturers are stuck at Benin\u2019s border with Nigeria<\/p>\n

Nigeria
\nwhich is Africa\u2019s most populous country partially closed its borders with Benin
\nin August this year, in a move to curb the movement of illicit weapons and
\nother smuggled goods.<\/p>\n

Speaking
\nto Citi Business News, Chief Executive Officer of the AGI, Seth Twum Akwaboah
\nsaid the move was having a toll on Ghanaian industries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe
\nclosure of the borders is unfair to the spirit of ECOWAS; we have sent our complaints
\nto the government. As we speak now, we have Ghanaian goods stuck at the Benin
\nborder, meanwhile Nigerian goods are entering our country,\u201d the AGI CEO
\nlamented. <\/p>\n
