{"id":770800,"date":"2019-12-24T08:57:50","date_gmt":"2019-12-24T08:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/12\/24\/ndcs-elvis-afriyie-threatens-ec-with-mayhem\/"},"modified":"2019-12-24T08:57:50","modified_gmt":"2019-12-24T08:57:50","slug":"ndcs-elvis-afriyie-threatens-ec-with-mayhem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/12\/24\/ndcs-elvis-afriyie-threatens-ec-with-mayhem\/","title":{"rendered":"NDC\u2019s Elvis Afriyie Threatens EC With Mayhem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Elvis Afriyie Ankrah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A LEAKED audio interaction<br \/>\nfrom a crucial meeting of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) party<br \/>\nhas revealed it intends to scuttle the compilation of a new voters\u2019 register by<br \/>\noccupying the head office of the Electoral Commission (EC) and bringing Accra<br \/>\nto a standstill. <\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s<br \/>\nDirector of Elections, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, was captured in the audio<br \/>\nencouraging members of the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the party<br \/>\nand some top personalities to stand up against a new voters\u2019 register.<\/p>\n<p>His passion for<br \/>\na Machiavellian approach could not have offered a better reason for their<br \/>\nresentment of a new voters\u2019 register.<\/p>\n<p>He said if the<br \/>\nparty does not take employ such a measure against a new voters\u2019 register that<br \/>\ncould spell an electoral disaster for the NDC in the 2020 polls.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled the<br \/>\nparty\u2019s ability to engage in such disturbance of the public peace, saying \u201cwe have<br \/>\ndone it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we invest GH\u00a2200,000,<br \/>\nGH\u00a2500,000, GH\u00a21 million and fight this register, bring Accra to a standstill<br \/>\nfor once, occupy the EC head office, and we can do it, we have done it before,\u201d<br \/>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>This, coming on<br \/>\nthe heels of a press conference the party held recently to express their<br \/>\nmisgivings about a new voters\u2019 register, is enough indication of how a<br \/>\nreplacement of the roll of voters is a dreadful subject to the party.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn from Buhari<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recalling what<br \/>\nhe observed in Nigeria as an ECOWAS observer during the country\u2019s\u00a0 last presidential polls, he said \u201call Buhari did was to suppress votes in the strong<br \/>\nholds of his opponents and then allow free votes in his strongholds and he won<br \/>\nin spite of the fact that he was so unpopular.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Wasted Money<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He advised the party leadership not to joke with the<br \/>\nsubject as he laid bare his analysis of the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the whopping amount of money that the party<br \/>\nintends to spend on the elections, he said the venture would be a waste should<br \/>\nthe polls be lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWe should not joke with this thing and if<br \/>\nwe do the analysis properly, we are going to spend hundreds of millions of<br \/>\nGhana Cedis to do the campaign. If we lose, \u2018God forbid, God Forbid\u2019 the<br \/>\nelection, all that money would have gone to waste,\u201d he stressed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf<br \/>\nwe invest GH\u00a2200,000, GH\u00a2500,000 and fight this register, bring Accra to a<br \/>\nstandstill for once, occupy the EC head office and we can do it; we have done<br \/>\nit before. These are things we have been doing even as ordinary students. We brought<br \/>\nthe Ministry of Finance to a standstill and the Ministry of Education to a<br \/>\nstandstill. We can do it; it is possible. Let\u2019s have confidence in ourselves<br \/>\nand stop the defeatist attitude; we can do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NPP Will Easily Cave In<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nmany withdrawn bills, according to him, suggest that the NPP would easily be<br \/>\ncowed into withdrawing the bill on the subject as it has done to many before<br \/>\nit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe<br \/>\ncan move people and bring this country to a standstill. Just one day and they<br \/>\nwill withdraw. They have withdrawn many, many other bills so it is not<br \/>\nimpossible,\u201d he charged. <\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nre-echoed that even if the bill is passed \u201cwe must resist this thing; we can do<br \/>\nit.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Asiedu Nketia Press Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At a press<br \/>\nconference held at the party\u2019s headquarters earlier, the General Secretary of<br \/>\nthe party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, had given reasons why the opposition party is<br \/>\nagainst the compilation of a new voters\u2019 register.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closeness To Elections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to<br \/>\nhim, the elections are too close and that the decision itself is a contravention<br \/>\nof some aspects of ECOWAS Protocol.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expensive Venture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He added that a new voters\u2019 register would be too expensive and that the amount involved could be used to build roads and schools.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>By A.R.
