The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has stated its position on recent allegations that its members may have under-declared taxes to the Ghana Revenue Authority.<\/p>\n

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of
\nthe Chamber, Ken Ashigbe has told journalists at the Chamber\u2019s end of year
\nmedia engagement that they were surprised to have heard the Minister of
\nCommunication suggest that the telcos had under declared revenue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have not seen any such
\nreport \u2013 and when it comes to taxes we deal with the Ghana Revenue Authority
\n(GRA), not the Communications Ministry, so we have written to GRA to provide us
\na report of the said evidence \u2013 we copied the Communications Minister,\u201d he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

He said telcos are key partners in
\nthe implementation of the common platform and so it is surprising that such a
\nsensitive information is allegedly emerging from the platform and telcos are
\ncompletely in the dark about it.<\/p>\n

Ken Ashigbe noted that even though
\nevery GHC1 telcos make, 40Gp goes to government in taxes, telcos are very strict
\non themselves when it comes to paying taxes so the Minister\u2019s claims came as a
\nsurprise to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaxes are not something we
\ntake for granted at all so we are not treating this matter lightly because
\nthose claims go to the very core of our reputation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He noted that contrary to the years
\nof repeated claims that telcos under declare revenue and hide taxes, the
\nindustry continues to contribute immensely to government\u2019s tax revenue every
\nyear.<\/p>\n

Indeed, recently the Chamber
\nreleased a report indicating in 2018 alone, telcos paid a whopping GHC2.2
\nbillion in taxes, representing some 9 per cent of government total revenue
\nbasket.<\/p>\n

They noted that out of the total,
\nCommunication Service Tax (CST) topped with \u00a2420 million, followed by Value
\nAdded Tax (VAT), \u00a2413 million; Corporate Income Tax (CIT), \u00a2343 million;
\nWithholding Tax (WHT), \u00a2293 million and Import Duties, \u00a2180 million.<\/p>\n

The rest are Surcharge on
\nInternational Incoming Traffic (SIIT) GH\u00a2155 million; SIIT is the quantum of
\nsix cents per every minute of call that comes from overseas into the country.<\/p>\n

The Chamber also noted that in 2015,
\nthe year the Minister claimed telcos hid taxes, they paid a whopping GHC1.4
\nbillion in taxes, and in 2017, the paid GHC1.74 billion.<\/p>\n

They argued that the figures clearly
