Yaw Buaben Asamoa<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the opposition
\nNational Democratic Congress (NDC) should take the blame of the voter apathy
\nthat set in during the just-ended District Assembly and Unit Committee
\nElections.<\/p>\n

Addressing a news conference in Accra yesterday, Mr. Yaw Buaben Asamoa,
\nCommunications Director of the NPP, said the hypocritical posture of the NDC
\ntowards the election caused many people to stay away from the all-important
\nexercise and must, therefore, take full responsibility for what happened on
\nDecember 17.<\/p>\n

President Akufo-Addo\u2019s determination to deepen local governance was
\nthwarted at the last minute when the NDC members after agreeing that there
\nshould be a referendum to change aspects of the 1992 Constitution to pave the
\nway for political parties to sponsor candidates during district assembly
\nelections said they were no longer supporting the move and started campaigning
\nfor a \u2018No\u2019 vote.<\/p>\n

As a result, the President was compelled to cancel the referendum
\nthat would have amended provisions in the Constitution for parties to field
\ncandidates at the local level, citing lack of consensus.<\/p>\n

The Electoral Commission had scheduled the referendum to be held
\nalongside the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections on December 17.<\/p>\n

Mr. Asamoa said, \u201cWe believe that it is because the NDC broke the
\nconsensus that is why interest in the election plummeted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was interest being generated heavily; we were moving on the
\nbasis of consensus, because as the President said, this had nothing to do with
\nNDC or NPP but out of ill-faith the NDC chose to turn it into a partisan
\nprocess and turned round and broke the consensus that we had engineered.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
