The Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) has said the development of
\nmining communities should be a priority of the government.<\/p>\n
\u201cGovernment and the other stakeholders have no further excuse but
\napproach the issue of mining community development not only from the
\nsocioeconomic standpoint but the likely security threat the continuous neglect
\nposes by ensuring the full operationalization and realization of the Minerals
\nDevelopment Fund Act 2016 (Act 912) and the Minerals Income Investment Fund Act
\n2018 (Act 978) without any further delay,\u201d the workers said in a resolution
\npassed at its Quadrennial Delegates Conference in Tarkwa in the Western Region
\nlast week.<\/p>\n
It further resolved that given the far-reaching implications of
\nnon-standard forms of employment on workers (i.e. job and income insecurity,
\ndeclining pensions, abuse of workers\u2019 rights, unfavourable working conditions,
\netc.), the government (i.e. declining taxes, consumption, declining pension
\nfund, employment creation, etc.), and the economy as a whole, the Ministry of
\nEmployment and Labour Relations through the National Tripartite Committee must,
\nas a matter of urgency, prioritize this growing concern and engage with all
\nstakeholders to address the issue without any further delay.<\/p>\n
The resolution said that the government must, as a matter of
\npriority, set up an independent body or mandate any of its existing regulatory
\ninstitutions to supervise and ensure total compliance with the tenets of these
\ndevelopment\/stability agreements as the continuous neglect is a serious drain
\non the country and a leeway for multinationals to abuse such agreements with
\nimpunity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat given the importance of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) to the
\ndevelopment of Ghana and the continent at large, we stand with the Organisation
\nof Trade Unions in West Africa (OTUWA) to demand through the Ghanaian
\nGovernment to the African Union to step up efforts aimed at bringing the full
\nimplementation of the AMV to fruition. We are also calling on other civil
\nsociety organizations and the media to join forces to push the continent to act
\non the AMV,\u201d the union resolved.<\/p>\n
Again, it said government must double its efforts targeted at
\nregularising the activities of small-scale miners and expanding the frontiers
\nof small-scale mining in Ghana whilst dealing ruthlessly with any persons,
\nwhether Ghanaian, foreign, or in officialdom, associated with or benefiting
\nfrom the activities of \u2018galamsey\u2019.<\/p>\n
It further urged the government as a matter of priority to check \u201cthe
\nwanton depletion of the country\u2019s finite mineral resources by taking practical
\nsteps to control the volumes to mine at a particular point in time, the union
\nurged, saying this will ensure that mineral exploitation serves the needs of
\nboth current as well as future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n
They used the conference to swear into office newly elected GMWU
\nexecutives.<\/p>\n
