Rev Prof Paul Frimpong-Manso<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The Board Chairman of the National Commission on Small Arms
\nand Light Weapons has expressed concern about the number of law enforcement
\nofficers who have lost their lives this year through firearms in the hands of
\ncriminals.<\/p>\n

A number of measures Rev Prof Paul Frimpong-Manso stated in
\na press release were being laid out to control the situation among which was
\nthe marking of weapons to facilitate the easy tracing of firearms used to
\ncommit crime.<\/p>\n

He recalled the grim statistics presented by the Inspector
\nGeneral of Police during the recent Police Memorial Day activities, when he
\nsaid that \u201cnine police personnel had
\ndied in line of duty this year, 2019, alone.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThen on the December 3, 2019, barely three days after the
\nPolice Memorial Day,
\nit was reported that another police officer who was performing his lawful duty,
\nproviding escort in a bullion van, had been gunned down by armed criminals in
\nSefwi Asempaneye in the Sefwi Wiawso area of the Western North Region.\u201d <\/p>\n

While the commission extends its condolences to the families
\nof the departed officers and other families who have lost their loved ones
\nthrough gun violence this year, the commission acknowledges the fact that this
\nis a phenomenon that requires urgent government attention.<\/p>\n

Some of the measures being unfurled to curb illicit arms
\nproliferation he said included public education and awareness on the dangers
\nassociated with the illicit gun trade, manufacture and abuse. \u201cWe shall also
\ncontinue to collaborate with other security agencies to prevent these needless
\nkillings using small arms,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

While the commission\u2019s efforts at curbing proliferation of
\nsmall arms in the country continued, challenges still persisted, he said. This,
\nhowever, did not call for despair; we need to stand together to defeat the
\ncriminals, he demanded of Ghanaians.<\/p>\n

The public, he entreated, should join the commission to
\nfight against the illicit small arms trade, manufacture and trafficking by
\nthese criminals. This he said required citizens to be vigilant and report any
\nsuspected illegal activities to the law enforcement agencies. <\/p>\n

There are gaps in the current laws for fighting the
\nproliferation of small arms and this reality has informed the ongoing efforts
\nto review the laws to respond to these emerging security threats of the 21st<\/sup>
\ncentury.<\/p>\n

He has pleaded with all stakeholders, particularly
\ntraditional authorities, leaders of faith-based organizations, the media, the
\nNational Peace Council and the general public to support their endeavours to
\nstrengthen the gun laws, to prevent gun-violence deaths and make society safe.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
