{"id":767659,"date":"2019-12-18T17:15:15","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T17:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/12\/18\/ghanaian-stranded-for-32-years-in-caribbean\/"},"modified":"2019-12-18T17:15:15","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T17:15:15","slug":"ghanaian-stranded-for-32-years-in-caribbean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/12\/18\/ghanaian-stranded-for-32-years-in-caribbean\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghanaian Stranded For 32 Years In Caribbean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Hassan Kennedy in jalaba and the deputy head of mission Havana <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ghanaian envoy to Cuba Napoleon Abdulai and the mission are keeping a certain Hassan Kennedy who hails from Pig Farm, Accra and has been stranded in the Caribbean for the past three decades. <\/p>\n<p>After engaging in menial jobs in Mauritania his first port of call for<br \/>\ntwo years, he and three other Ghanaians stowed away in a Caribbean-bound ship.<\/p>\n<p>The captain of the ship was said to have left them in Saint Vincent and<br \/>\nthe Grenadines (SVG) after disagreements over their pay. <\/p>\n<p>One of them, <strong><em>DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong> learnt from Abdulai, got<br \/>\nmarried on the 32 island nation and two managed to get to the USA following<br \/>\nsupport from family members. Kennedy aka Hassan Ali Hassan was left behind<br \/>\ndoing all manner of jobs to fend for himself. <\/p>\n<p>After losing his job two decades ago, he developed a mental challenge and<br \/>\nwas admitted to Mental Health and Rehabilitation Centre in Glen SVG where he<br \/>\nwas treated. <\/p>\n<p>A Good Samaritan Ayyub Abdullah from the Island of Grenada befriended<br \/>\nHassan and provided him with support. Nicknamed \u2018African\u2019 by Vincentians,<br \/>\nHassan endured unspeakable hardship as he had no travel documents and money to<br \/>\npurchase tickets. He speaks Ga, Twi and Hausa.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghanaian mission only got to learn about him from the Searchlight<br \/>\nnewspaper of SVG story on him in June, this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter establishing the fact that he is Ghanaian, the mission issued a<br \/>\nTraveler\u2019s Certificate (TC) to Kennedy and brought him to Havana for onward<br \/>\nreturn to Accra. A serious challenge arose as TCs were not recognized by<br \/>\nimmigration officers in Trinidad and Tobago,\u201d the envoy told <strong><em>DAILY<br \/>\nGUIDE<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A series of diplomatic interventions, formal and informal finally got<br \/>\nthe National Security Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and Foreign Minister to on<br \/>\nhumanitarian grounds allow Kennedy to pass through their country under the<br \/>\nescort of Fred Dankwah, Consular Officer to the envoy.<\/p>\n<p>They flew from SVG through Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago and<br \/>\nPanama City to Havana on Sunday night, December 14, to Cuba, <strong><em>DAILY<br \/>\nGUIDE<\/em><\/strong> has learnt.<\/p>\n<p>From Havana, Kennedy will be accompanied to Accra through Istanbul by<br \/>\nAlhassan Yakubu, Deputy Head of Mission.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan\u2019s plight according to Ghana\u2019s High Commissioner to SVG,<br \/>\nhighlights the need to raise awareness on seeking greener pastures without<br \/>\ndocuments such as passports. \u201cEvery Ghanaian needs to have the National ID to<br \/>\nfacilitate support from the 55 diplomatic missions Ghana has. Every week one or<br \/>\ntwo Ghanaians land in Havana with the intention of swimming the 90 nautical<br \/>\nmiles to Florida. This is propagated by unscrupulous travel agents who lied to<br \/>\nthe young men who spent a few thousand dollars buying tickets of Turkish<br \/>\nairline. They are stranded and sent home immediately by Cuban Immigration<br \/>\nauthorities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The High Commissioner has<br \/>\nappealed to people not to buy the misinformation and lies of travel agents. You<br \/>\ncan\u2019t get to the US from Cuba by swimming he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan<br \/>\nKennedy spent two years in Mauritania and 34 in SVG.<\/p>\n<p>He is expected to be handed over on Thursday, at the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs, before noon. <\/p>\n<p><strong>By A.R.
