{"id":765896,"date":"2019-12-16T12:29:19","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T12:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/12\/16\/nana-dares-corruption-critics\/"},"modified":"2019-12-16T12:29:19","modified_gmt":"2019-12-16T12:29:19","slug":"nana-dares-corruption-critics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/12\/16\/nana-dares-corruption-critics\/","title":{"rendered":"Nana Dares \u2018Corruption\u2019 Critics &#8211;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong> President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has rekindled the debate that<br \/>\nhe is not corrupt by throwing a challenge to his opponents to mention his<br \/>\nso-called corrupt deeds either in private or as President.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am certainly not corrupt. I continue to say that I am not<br \/>\ncorrupt; I have not been corrupt. I have not taken any money from anybody to<br \/>\ngive anybody any contract. It is not part of my arrangement,\u201d the President<br \/>\nboldly proclaimed last Friday in Accra during an encounter with senior<br \/>\njournalists at Jubilee House, the seat of government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Corrupt Officials Prosecution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President made it clear that his posture towards the fight<br \/>\nagainst corruption had not changed but said that he cannot also supervise an<br \/>\nadministration where due processes are not followed in the prosecution of<br \/>\npersons accused of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>He said there are some 21 former government officials who are<br \/>\ncurrently on trial for corruption, with the amounts involved totalling over<br \/>\nGH\u00a2700 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are saying there are no prosecutions. Twenty-one people are<br \/>\non trial in Ghana today for corruption. One of the things that I am not<br \/>\nprepared to do under any conditions is to do away with due process. I fought<br \/>\nfor it all my life in Ghana that we will have a state in Ghana which recognizes<br \/>\nand accepts and acknowledges due process as a fundamental instrument of state<br \/>\npolicy,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>He said Ghanaians should be patient with the judicial process to<br \/>\ndeliver justice and fairness to all, saying \u201cso, putting somebody before the<br \/>\ncourt and that person is making application after application \u2013 whether it is<br \/>\nto delay the process or whether the applications are genuine \u2013 you have to recognize<br \/>\nhis right to do it and it is when those are exhausted that the trial can begin.<br \/>\nSome of the trials have started \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clearing Agent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Akufo-Addo reiterated that he was not at the Presidency to<br \/>\nshield appointees accused of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not my job to clear or convict any person accused of<br \/>\nwrongdoing, or of engaging in acts of corruption. My job is to act on<br \/>\nallegations of corruption by referring the issue or issues to the appropriate<br \/>\ninvestigative agencies for the relevant enquiry and necessary action. That is<br \/>\nexactly what has been done since I assumed the mantle of leadership,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had investigated every allegation of corruption levelled<br \/>\nagainst any of his appointees, saying \u201cif an appointee is cleared of any<br \/>\nwrongdoing, the evidence adduced and recommendations made by these agencies,<br \/>\nafter the investigations are concluded, are what clear the accused persons, not<br \/>\nmyself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he would continue to increase budgetary allocations to<br \/>\nanti-graft institutions for them to work assiduously in the fight against<br \/>\ncorruption. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2019, there has been an increase in budgetary allocation from<br \/>\nover GH\u00a216 million to over GH\u00a240 million for CHRAJ next year,\u201d he disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nepotism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said he has only two relatives in his government and mentioned<br \/>\nFinance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as his cousin.<\/p>\n<p>He also described the Finance Minister as competent and hard<br \/>\nworking; he touted his credentials and said he qualifies for that position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afrobarometer Report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President said he is not the type that rubbishes opinion polls<br \/>\nsuch as the Afrobarometer Survey that was recently done by the Center for Democratic<br \/>\nDevelopment (CDD) which had projected that the 2020 presidential election could<br \/>\ngo to a second round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy attitude to polls has never changed. The only poll that matters<br \/>\nis the poll of the 7th of December; that\u2019s the only poll that matters. I\u2019m not<br \/>\nsaying that if people do polling you then just rubbish it, no, that\u2019s not my<br \/>\nview; you have to look at it, take it into account, analyse it and see for<br \/>\nyourself what is being said,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know of situations where lots of people did not predict of my<br \/>\nbeing here (Presidency), or I will never be here; I\u2019m here,\u201d he said sparking<br \/>\nspontaneous laughter. \u201cYou then have to worry yourself about one-touch,<br \/>\nlow-touch, whatever, but I\u2019m not discouraged,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pursuing Programmes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me what is important is my programme and the work that I\u2019m<br \/>\ncarrying out because I believe it is beneficial to the people of Ghana and when<br \/>\nthe time comes for Ghanaians to comment, I\u2019m optimistic and confident that it<br \/>\nwill be a good comment that they will make on the 7th of December, so I\u2019m not<br \/>\ndiscouraged about the afrobarometer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMANI 48%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President said his NPP government had done more than the 48%<br \/>\nthat IMANI Ghana rated his administration in terms of performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI disagree with the 48 assessment by IMANI. I think we deserve much<br \/>\nhigher. We are looking at 72. We have a fundamental disagreement with that<br \/>\nrating.
