President Nana Akufo-Addo<\/strong><\/p>\n

PRESIDENT Nana Addo
\nDankwa Akufo-Addo says many of the indebtedness inherited by his government,
\nincluding the GH\u023c1.2
\nbillion arrears on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) that was gradually
\nturning the scheme back to a \u2018cash and carry\u2019 system, have been settled.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we are
\ntalking about National Health Insurance Scheme where the arrears are within
\nfour to five months. As of May this year, the indebtedness of the National
\nHealth Insurance Scheme had been fully discharged,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Recently, members of
\nthe Private Health Facilities Association on the NHIS threatened to revert to
\nthe \u2018cash and carry\u2019 system of healthcare if the government did not address
\ntheir reimbursement concerns.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the members
\nof the association said there were outstanding payments which dated back to
\n2018, and its members wanted government to settle by December 16, 2019 to avoid
\ngoing back to the \u2018cash and carry\u2019 system.<\/p>\n

But speaking at a
\nmedia encounter on Friday in Accra, President Akufo-Addo stated that claims of
\nup to September (this year) are those that are being dealt with in the system
\nbecause there is always an in-built delay in settling arrears because of a line
\nbetween the service, the claim, and the payment.<\/p>\n

According to him,
\neven though the current situation is not the best, it is a vast improvement over
\nwhat the government inherited, adding that \u201cwe want to work to make sure the
\nscheme is pumped up.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the
\nsettlement of legacy debts was part of the overall plan to sustain the gain
\nmade by the government. \u201cI think that we need to make sure that these
\nfundamentals, the fiscal deficits, rates of inflation, rates of interest are
\nheld in a good place,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The President said
\nhis government inherited an economy with the slowest growth rate of about 3.6
\nper cent for almost a decade, with a high rate of inflation hovering around 15
\nper cent.<\/p>\n

So the main task was
\nto bring the economy back on track in order to create an opportunity for lots
\nof growth \u2026 \u201cWe have to have a strong base. Some fundamentals have to be in
\nplace. People have talked about the macroeconomic fundamentals. They are not
\njust statistics but statistics with significance,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

The President said macroeconomic statistics reflect what is in the pockets of the citizenry and one\u2019s ability to handle day-to-day issues of living, pointing out that inflation rate is now about 8.3 per cent which is a significant improvement over what his government inherited. <\/p>\n
