President Akufo-Addo exchanging pleasantries with Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin<\/strong><\/p>\nIt was all pomp and pageantry at Okyeman as thousands of dignitaries
\nconverged on Kyebi in the Eastern Region to celebrate 20 years of Osagyefuo Amoatia
\nOfori Panin as Okyenhene of the people of Akyem Abuakwa.<\/p>\n
The Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Municipality which
\nis the seat of the Okyenhene received dignitaries, including the president,
\nformer presidents, ministers, chiefs, MPs, diplomats, business people and a
\nhost of others.<\/p>\n
President Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Dr. Bawumia, former President
\nRawlings, the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Ocquaye; NPP Chairman Freddie
\nBlay, Chief of Staff Frema Opare, ambassadors and high commissioners and many others,
\nincluding Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II, who was the guest of honour, were all
\ntreated to rich tradition and customs of the people of Akyem Abuakwa.<\/p>\n
The Overlord of Dagbon State, Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II, in his
\ndelivery, called on the government to deepen the collaboration it has with
\ntraditional authorities for the development of the country.<\/p>\n
According to him, modern governance arrangements seem to have robbed
\nthe traditional rulers of most of their powers although he said traditional
\nrulers have a critical role to play in the mobilization of the people and
\npartnering with the government to build the nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust as the government consults the Council of State mandatorily in
\ncertain cases, so should the National House of Chiefs be accorded similar
\nrecognition. Now that we have well educated traditional rulers, it\u2019s imperative
\nfor the government to access the express views of traditional rulers on matters
\nof national interest besides Parliament,\u201d the Ya-Na, who spoke through the
\nChief of Nanton, advised.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs custodians of our traditional values and cultural norms, it\u2019s
\nimperative for traditional rulers to uphold our fatherly responsibility for all
\nand sundry. That is why we must, more than ever, shed our partisan political
\ngabs and put on our caps of wisdom when it comes to controversial issues that
\ncould put the nation asunder.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Ya-Na Mahama also said it is imperative for traditional rulers
\nto close their ranks to enable them to unite their people towards Ghana\u2019s
\nultimate goal of freedom and justice just as Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin did
\nby inviting him to grace the occasion.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s beware of the divisive political ploys by some politicians
\nwho seek to escalate inter-ethnic acrimony in the country, especially as we
\napproach the electioneering year. This caution also goes to the youth who should
\nbe circumspect about their utterances and machinations of over ambitious
\npoliticians who are bent on furthering their political aspirations at all costs,\u201d
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
Two Proposals<\/strong><\/p>\nHe then made two proposals for discussion, including the replacement
\nof Council of State with a Senate or Upper House with membership of prominent
\nchiefs, distinguished personalities with diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n
According to him, the said Senate would be the appointing authority
\nfor positions such as the Auditor General, Inspector General of Police and
\nChairperson and members of Electoral Commission, Vice Chancellors of State
\nUniversities and Executive Head of the National Media Commission.<\/p>\n
He also called for an end to the prevailing politics of
\nwinner-takes-all, saying \u201cI endorse the call by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and other
\nGhanaians who have called for the termination of our winner-takes-all politics.
\nI humbly urge the President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa
\nAkufo-Addo to appoint a presidential commission to look into these two
\nproposals and make appropriate recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n
He lauded the Okyenhene for a peaceful 20-year rule and also celebrated him for spearheading development in his area.<\/p>\n
The Okyenhene dressed in a beautiful Kente cloth reiterated the need
\nfor parents not to undermine the education of their children and lauded the Free
\nSHS policy which he said would bring hope to many people.<\/p>\n
He also called for the need to deepen decentralization and also spoke passionately against environmental degradation, urging the public to embrace agriculture which he said was the future of the country.<\/p>\n
