Kumasi, Dec.15, GNA
\n– The formation of Gender Equality and Social Inclusions (GESI) groups in three
\nselected districts in the country, has surged enrolment onto the National
\nHealth Insurance Scheme in communities in those districts.<\/span><\/p>\n

GESI, is a STAR
\nGhana-funded programme, being implemented by Alliance for Reproductive Health
\nRights (ARHR) in Agona, Komenda \u2013 Edina- Eguafo – Abirem (KEEA), in the Central
\nRegion and South Dayi in the Volta Region.<\/span><\/p>\n

The focus is to
\nensure that women, men, boys and girls in the beneficiary communities, are
\nempowered to pursue their human rights and fundamental freedoms.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also ensures that
\nthey are valued as equal active participants in the wellbeing of their
\nhouseholds, workplaces, communities and societies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Doris Ampong,
\nCommunications Officer of ARHR, made these disclosures while addressing a
\nstakeholder validation meeting in Kumasi.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said a
\nparticipatory monitoring of health facilities and services in the month of
\nNovember this year in the selected Districts indicates that access and coverage
\nof NHIS, had improved significantly in these districts.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Agona
\nDistrict alone, she said a total of 2,304 persons, who were members of the GESI
\ngroup, were enrolled onto the scheme between January and September, this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

A total of 2,273
\npeople were recorded around that same period in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Ampong said this
\nwas an indication that efforts by ARHR in achieving universal health coverage
\nin the beneficiary Districts, are on course.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said five
\nsatellite NHIS offices have been established in health centres in the South
\nDayi District, to address the challenges of accessibility with regard to
\ngetting enrolled onto the NHIS.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through continuous
\neducation as indicated in the GESI monitoring tool, NHIS holders now accept
\nthat not all health conditions are covered under the NHIS, thus\u00a0\u00a0 they ought to pay for these services.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Agona District,
\nthe report indicates that the relationship between the NHIS service providers
\nand GESI groups have improved through the collective efforts of the leadership
\nof NHIS and the community leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n

There has been
\ncordial relationships between health service providers and adolescent.<\/span><\/p>\n

This, according to
\nthe report, has enabled adolescents to share confidential information with
\nhealth service providers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Again,
\nnewly-constructed health facilities in the KEEA are disability-friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n
