Kumasi, Dec. 14, GNA – Vice President Dr
\nMahamudu Bawumia has cut sod for work to begin on the first phase of the
\nrehabilitation and auxiliary infrastructure of Kumasi inner city road and
\nadjacent streets project.<\/span><\/p>\n

The construction works will benefit six
\nmetropolitan and municipal areas, including the Asokwa, Kwadaso, Oforikrom,
\nTafo and Suame Municipalities. Manhyia, Bantama, Nhyiaeso and Subin, all sub \u2013
\nmetros within the Kumasi Metropolis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Addressing the chiefs and people of the
\nAshanti Region at Kentenkrono-Nsenie, near Kumasi, on Friday, Vice President
\nBawumia reiterated government\u2019s commitment to the provision of infrastructure
\nacross the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said the development of Ashanti Region,
\nespecially Kumasi and its surrounding towns were very dear to the heart of the
\nPresident and would mobilise every resource available to improve the condition
\nof urban road network.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said some road works undertaken in the
\nRegion since 2017 including asphalt overlay of 70km of a planned 200km of roads
\nwithin Kumasi are expected to be completed in 2020; minor upgrading and
\nrehabilitation of 24km of roads completed within Ejisu, Juaben, Ayigya and
\nEffiduase.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVarious contracts for the rehabilitation
\nand upgrading of roads in Buokrom, Kwadaso, Antoa, Effiduase and Ejisu are
\nongoing. Road works are also ongoing in Bekwai and Mampong.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cProcurement for 30km of roads for the facelift
\nof the Obuasi township are ongoing. Under procurement also are minor
\nrehabilitation of selected roads in Ejura, Mampong, Offinso and Konongo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWork on the Obuasi-Anwiankwanta Road is
\nongoing as well as the Mampong Kofiase Road,\u201d the Vice President said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other projects are Kumasi roads and drainage
\nextension project, which is 35 per cent complete. Under this project, two km of
\nSissai River is being lined and 3.5km of the Lake Road would be widened to a
\n2×2 dual carriageway. <\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, a modern transport terminal
\nwould be constructed at Atonsu and it is anticipated that a significant part of
\nthe works would be completed by December 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n

The region is also expected to benefit under
\nthe Sinohydro Project Phase 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the Sinohydro Project Phase 1, Kumasi
\nand Mampong shall benefit from 100km of road works. Works are expected to start
\nin early 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vice President Bawumia said infrastructure,
\nparticularly roads, was very dear to the heart of President Akufo-Addo’s
\nadministration. <\/span><\/p>\n

He said President Akufo-Addo has declared
\n2020 as the year of roads and commencement certificates to the tune of 6.6
\nbillion cedis have been issued by the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of
\nRoads and Highways, to undertake the rehabilitation of critical roads
\nthroughout the country. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Kwasi Amoako Atta, the Minister for Roads
\nand Highways, efforts are being made to ensure the strict implementation of
\nroad construction contracts and any contractor that undertakes shoddy works
\nwould be held responsible.<\/span><\/p>\n
