{"id":764448,"date":"2019-12-13T14:58:56","date_gmt":"2019-12-13T14:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/12\/13\/insurance-dvla-go-live-in-january\/"},"modified":"2019-12-13T14:58:56","modified_gmt":"2019-12-13T14:58:56","slug":"insurance-dvla-go-live-in-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/12\/13\/insurance-dvla-go-live-in-january\/","title":{"rendered":"Insurance, DVLA Go Live In January"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p> <strong>Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vice-President<br \/>\nDr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that passengers will soon be able to check on<br \/>\ntheir phones if the commercial bus they are about to<br \/>\nboard has been properly insured.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid the database of the National Insurance Commission (NIC) and the Driver and<br \/>\nVehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) were being integrated for a takeoff in<br \/>\nJanuary 2020.<\/p>\n<p>According<br \/>\nto him, it is part of efforts to make it possible to access government services<br \/>\nand also ensure corruption is reduced to a manageable level.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking<br \/>\nat a special National Insurance Commission Cocktail Reception which brought<br \/>\ntogether key players in the insurance sector on Wednesday night, Dr. Bawumia said<br \/>\nthat the insurance industry has very important roles to play in the<br \/>\ndigitization programmes of government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter<br \/>\nmeetings with the DVLA and the National Insurance Commission about creating<br \/>\nbetter synergies between them, it is expected that the Motor Insurance Database<br \/>\nwill be connected to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) system<br \/>\nin January 2020 so that before a vehicle is issued with a road worthiness<br \/>\ncertificate, it can be verified whether it has a valid insurance cover from a<br \/>\nlicensed insurance company,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nadded that \u201cthe Motor Database will also make it possible for the travelling<br \/>\npublic to verify the authenticity of the insurance policies of commercial<br \/>\nvehicles before they board such vehicles. All you have to do is to enter the<br \/>\nnumber of the car on your phone, even if it is a \u2018yam\u2019 phone, and you can tell<br \/>\nif the \u2018trotro\u2019 or bus you are about to board is properly insured or not. You<br \/>\nwill know whether you are safe sitting in that car. This certainly brings<br \/>\nbetter awareness and protection for the ordinary Ghanaian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe<br \/>\ndatabase will also help to stop the leakages from the insurance revenues<br \/>\nthrough fake motor insurance stickers. Same thing has happened at the Passport<br \/>\nOffice. So we are getting there. The digitization agenda, which is designed to<br \/>\nmake accessing government services easier, is on course,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr.<br \/>\nBawumia noted that even though digitization brings significant advantages and<br \/>\nopportunities, it also creates vulnerabilities which could be critical and,<br \/>\ntherefore, need to be carefully managed. Government is, therefore, taking several<br \/>\nsteps to protect the nation\u2019s information infrastructure as part of the<br \/>\ndigitization programme, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst<br \/>\nof all, appropriate laws have been passed to provide the needed framework for<br \/>\nthe fight against cyber criminals. The Electronic Transactions Act and the<br \/>\nElectronic Payments Act regulate and protect electronic transactions and<br \/>\npayments. The Data Protection Act also protects the private data of government,<br \/>\ncitizens and businesses in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecondly,<br \/>\na National Cyber Security Policy and Strategy has been developed to monitor and<br \/>\nprotect the nation\u2019s cyber space.\u00a0 Again,<br \/>\nthe national SIM re-registration exercise scheduled for early 2020 is another<br \/>\ninitiative to mitigate cyber crimes committed using mobiles phones,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\ncommended the NIC for their hard work and urged them to deepen the<br \/>\ncollaboration with state agencies.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that passengers will soon be able to check on their phones if the commercial bus they are about to board has been properly insured.
