Three
\nteachers unions have called off their strike action following a court order.<\/p>\n

A
\nstatement issued and signed by the General Secretary of Ghana National
\nAssociation of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas T. Musah, said the decision by the unions
\nto call off the strike was arrived at on the advice of their lawyers in
\nconsequence to a court order of Wednesday, December 11.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe
\nhereby wish to inform all our members to call off the nationwide strike action
\nforthwith,\u201d the statement urged, adding \u201cour next line of action would be
\ncommunicated to the rank and file in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n

The
\nthree unions \u2014 Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT),
\nGhana National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of
\nConcerned Teachers (CCT-Gh) \u2014 recently declared a
\nstrike over unpaid arrears between 2012 and 2016 when Mahama and his NDC were
\nin power which the teachers have termed \u2018Legacy Debt\u2019.<\/p>\n

On
\nWednesday, the government released GH\u00a249,998,626.72 for the settlement of the outstanding
\nfor the teachers.<\/p>\n

The
\nMinistry of Finance ordered the Controller and Accountant General\u2019s Department
\n(CAGD) to release the stated amount to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to the
\naffected teachers.<\/p>\n

A
\ncorrespondence dated December 11, 2019 signed by the Deputy Finance Minister,
\nAbena Osei Asare, said, \u201cYou (CAGD) are hereby authorised to release the sum of
\nGH\u00a249,998,626.72\u00a0 to enable the
\nDirector-General, Ghana Education Service, to pay outstanding transfer grants
\nand other allowances to qualified staff of GES.\u201d<\/p>\n

The
\ngovernment gesture follows a strike action by teachers in the folds of the
\nGhana National Association of Graduate Teachers, Ghana National Association of
\nTeachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers as a means of piling pressure
\nto have their arrears settled. <\/p>\n

The
\nthree teachers unions had insisted they would return to the classroom until
\ntheir demands were met in spite of a directive from the National Labour
\nCommission to do so immediately. <\/p>\n

The monies being demanded by the teachers unions were incurred from John Mahama and his NDC days, a GES statement had explained earlier.<\/p>\n
